Just had the petrol tank on my 1971 4/4 2 seater repaired. It was rebuilt when it came to New Zealand and put on wire wheels. Please if somebody could tell me the size and thickness of the ply that covers the petrol tank under the spare wheel.

I don't have intimate knowledge of the 4/4 (A Ford Crossflow 1600cc) , but in general the thickness of the wood used is not normally critical on non load-bearing parts. I think I used 3/8th Marine grade ply.
MMC certainly used odd bits and pieces , whatever was to hand, in the 1970s. It is all a lot more controlled now as each car gets the correct set of parts as they move down the line.

My 1986 car has no plywood at all over the petrol tank under the spare wheel.

Neither did my '76. Just the board the tank was mounted on...

Neither did my '76. Just the board the tank was mounted on... That's not ply on my car. 3 ash planks about ⅝" thick.

No, not ply on mine either - solid wood  Might have a photo somewhere with the spare removed.

Here's mine. There's a stainless steel sheet that sits on top of the ash frame underneath the spare wheel, but that's not original AFAIK.

Mine (on RTA51R - miss that car!) - steel spare wheel mount. Top of tank visible to lower edge. No tank cover.

Thanks for all the reply's. Seems as though as it is a Morgan there are differences. Just from looking a various photos I assumed it was ply underneath the spare wheel but looking at your photo Graham it looks like a piece of sheetmetal. Please could you confirm if it was. I was thinking that the wood/metal cover protected the fuel gauge sender unit and top of the fuel tank from being flooded so not likely to be present with a disc wheel spare.

Doug . It's probably a crash requirement, my 79 +8 had the same. Haven't taken the spare off the 4/4 to have a look yet.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.
