I'm going to attempt to fit a smiths clock to my dash tomorrow, in the space to the right of the rev counter.

Have a brand new 52mm hole saw - the plan is to measure out the hole, and remove a circle of vinyl from the dash slightly larger than the hole before I start drilling - it will be covered by the bezel.

Any tips or hints before I take the plunge?

Good luck. I would cover the area with masking tape so the drill doesn't slip.

My secret with hole saws, is to drill the pilot hole first with a separate drill, and most important use REVERSE for the first few revolutions to drill the first 2 or 3mm depth with the hole saw

You can try to use this kind of compass to cut the vinyl:

excellent advice which does work; I would also second the use of masking tape over the dash.

I know it's a spanking new hole saw but I would also be inclined to do a test cut on some scrap and make sure the saw is true to size....

Do not cut the vinyl larger!!!! The width of the bezel is not so much more that the diameter of the hole that you will need.

Peter is dead right , put some cuts in vinyl outwards and peel back before drilling then fold it inwards through the hole after filing the hole to a snug fit (including the thickness of vinyl) this will avoid any unsightly gaps showing when you are exposed to big temperature changes.

I agree with Peter, when I cut a hole in my dash I first cut the hole in a piece of plywood and then inserted the gauge to check on hole size and bezel fit. Once satisfied I went for the real thing.
