I have an intermitant starting problem on my 97 Plus 8 3.9.
A new battery hasn't solved it. When turning the ignition, ignition lights on, fuel pump runs, but then nothing. It won't turn over despite new battery. Have a few long runs to make and want to try a new starter motor and soleniod. Has anyone changed theirs, there seems to be a few different Rover variants out there.

I guess you will have substituted the starter relay for the fan control relay to check it ?

It does sound like the relay. The fuel pump relay has one alongside it on the firewall usually. As Richard suggests, swap them.

Maybe the 10AS? In the first instance Have you tried a fresh battery in the remote, or try the spare remote.

It would be worth checking all the earth connections.

If the engine isn’t turning over, start with the starter relay under the bonnet, switch it with the fan relay which sits alongside it. It won’t be the main relay-which sits next to the fuel pump relay as this powers the ECU and controls the fuel pump to start/stop.

If the relay is ok, jump the Starter Solenoid to prove the starter motor, if it is ok.

Check the fuse , if the fuse is ok

Check the earths, if the connectivity is ok.

Check out the Spider immobiliser control unit behind the dash at the far right - a black box about 2” square. They are notorious for dry soldered joints.
If the Spider Unit proves ok- you can buy a link out block on eBay for about a tenner.

Check out the 10AS immobiliser .

Check k the earth on the bulkhead from the engine. My Roadster had that problem. It was a dry joint.

Many thanks for your very helpful replies. I had not considered a relay. Discovered 3 relays high under the dash. Of which the main Bosch one was not fully in place. Have push it fully home and hoping this could be an answer. So far with 3 successful starts it could be. Incidently only 1 relay on the bulkhead, not sure yet what role it plays but suspect it could be the radiator fan.I am planning a fuller look at the weekend including work on the earthing leads.
