So if balancing using the wheel mounted to the hub, then one could just use the spindle bolt and a simple stand (or event he swingarm-assuming no brake assembly to cause drag). Centering cones and additional bearings seem a bit superfluous to me.

No idea where I got my one (incidentally,not the one in the photo, that was just taken from the web) but from a quick look on the Bay of E there is a huge selection of them available and at the kind of prices that might put you off the idea of building one.

If you do decide to remove the sprocket check, and if necessary clean, any exposed bolt thread beforehand.

There is at least 1 case where a tyre fitter simply removed the bolt with an airgun and stripped the internal thread. Repaired with a helicoil but a few strokes with a wire brush would have avoided the problem.

So picked up my M3W rear wheel and new tire from the fitter and they were able to balance it despite the hub center of unusual size. Their centering cones were sufficiently large to handle it.

As for stripped threads in the hub, I've installed studs for both the road wheel and drive sprocket as I'm generally opposed to running steel fasteners into/ out of alloy on a repetitive basis.

48mm OAL M12 x 1.5 for the wheel, and M10 x 1.25 for the sprocket. Final installed length of the sprocket studs will vary with steel sprocket (shorter) vs alloy sprocket (longer) and care must be taken that the sprocket stud doesn't extend far enough to foul the axle adjuster.

Back on topic. Hydroplaning, this might go a long way to rectify the issue. It is not the best in the hot and dry for fast cornering, BUT, it will help keep the rear end planted in wet and mossy and icy conditions. I have driven it on a driveway that I could not walk up using these tires on my MINI Coopers.
