I have a mystery on my 1996 4/4. My side lights work fine, my headlights have failed on dip and main beam BUT they do light up when I operate the main beam flash? Fuses all look ok - any ideas? Is there a relay somewhere?

could be the dim dip module, or the column switch/stalk. Mine went last year (column switch/stalk)

I agree with sawman. The column switch is a good starting point. With mine when I switched from dip to main beam both sections of the bulb lit up causing the light switch in the dashboard to melt. Very exspensive.

On my 1972 4/4, that means the stalk is broken again. This is a real pain as it is a new-old stock part and somewhere between £65-£140 depending on who has one.
I am stockpiling the £65 ones, (well, I have one at the back of the garage!), working on the basis that if I have a spare I won't need it.

Jeremy,
I guess you are switching the power to the dip/main headlights directly with the column switch?
Might be worth putting a changeover relay in circuit to take the high current, instead of the switch - much cheaper and easier to change a relay when things fail (once the wiring has been modified!).

I am stockpiling the £65 ones, (well, I have one at the back of the garage!), working on the basis that if I have a spare I won't need it. just wondering here... are hand signals still legal? when I took my driving test in UK many year ago, hand signals, copious wiggling of the gear-stick, adjusting the mirror needlessly and grasping of the handbrake lever, together with generous waving of arms out of the window were required to pass the test.  How does one fare when turn indicator's fail and you have to resort to hand signals of one sort of another. Here in Ozz one would probably get your arms ripped off in the exercise?

Don't think hand signals appear in the latest editions of the Highway Code Peter.
Nor those for horsedrawn vehicles...
Many modern drivers wouldn't recognise them anyway!

I had to resort to hand signals last week when my indicators blew a fuse - got a few funny looks, but thats normal in a morgan,n'est pas
