Potentially Morgan's most important car (the new Plus 4) ever and the forum has wondered off and into EV thread drift...we should be ashamed of our selves

Having read all the various thoughts and opinions on this thread I must confess it has helped to clarify my thoughts. I own a pretty expensive sports car through events which I would have preferred had not happened. I love my mog. The past 12 months of ownership have been more enjoyable and fun than I ever thought could be possible- it’s been an absolute hoot, every ruddy second behind that beautiful Motolita wheel. I feel v lucky to have such a “toy”. However, I have loved Morgan’s for many years based on how they look and the traditions and general Britishness behind MMC that give me a certain pride. Also a certain type seems to share these feelings (based in part on the people here on TM) and I feel privileged to share your emotions. However, I didn’t want a Morgan for fettling myself (due to a lack of skill) nor for driving in fear of ending up on two wheels, with two left in a hole, on the local roads (coz they really are crap here in this area (I’ve had to go back twice in last two weeks to the tyre place at £100 a time to get my wheels balanced and realigned due to persistent pothole ingress)) because the suspension cannot deal with anything greater than a blade of grass. If the new Plus 4 has an auto box and semi modern suspension I admit it is aimed at myself and Lady HB. If it costs between £55k-£65k some of that cost may be covered by the sale of Florence if I’m lucky, but, regardless of this and despite the EV talk, if I get 10-20 years or so driving a more comfortable Mog (with ability to occasionally share the driving with Lady HB), I will be a happy man plus, between you and I, Lady HB may be more willing to go on longer holidays in the car which is a big deal for me. I really can’t wait for what might be on the horizon! Just my penny worth.... HB Yes well put, but just goes to show how our needs differ and how well (in most part) a Morgan is able to meet them. I personally have no desire to change from my trad and I shudder at the thought of moving to an EV. I have driven them, a few, and each one was capable and in the main quick but totally soul-less. I want a sports car to be quick (ish) but also it has to be manual, no paddles please, no power steering or assisted gizmos. I like the relative simplicity (i can do most things on it) and the quirky roughness of it, even the suspension and handling i find quite adequate for my use. I also like the noise, the raspy, burbly exhaust note and the fact that it has to be driven well to get the best out of it. Changing gears at the right moment and taking sweeping bends on roads well away from motorways are a pure joy to me. Thats the pleasure and its even better when shared with some like minded pals. No, i won't go for an EV or indeed a CX based Morgan, costs aside, its just one step too far away from all the reasons i chose my Morgan but i fully appreciate why it would be a good fit for others.

Personally a Morgan to me means all that goes with the 'Trad'...
I said this before on another thread.... personally I see it as a big step away from all the virtues that drew me and probably many other proud Morgan owners to the 'Trad' in the first place. Seeing the photo of all those aluminium chassis/bodies reminds me of my tour of the Lotus factory. Repeated 'mass production'. The use of wood in the CX platform is minimal. I even wonder why MMC bother with it... it seems to be very much a 'sit on top of the chassis/body' rather than the entire body 'integration' that the trad has. It's almost that they realise that they still have to use wood in order to retain a sense of Morgan DNA...
That DNA also includes shuttle shake, questionable 'handling', the traditional suspension systems, skinny tyres, small rev happy engines and the knowledge that the trad has been built in virtually the same way as it was over 80 years ago,
I think its not a Morgan. It just looks like a Morgan. It's obviously great for jobs and the company and as a 'car', it seems like a great product. Clearly it is also attracting an entire new 'type' of purchaser/owner because it is faster, handles like a modern car, is safer and more comfortable. What's not to like?!
I personally could never imagine feeling truly 'connected' with a 'CX' when I opened my garage door do an early morning drive on a sunny and frosty winters day. But most certainly I do feel that and much more with the 'Trad'. It's not just the car... its the whole adventure and the connection and 'escape' to a bygone era that the trad gives.

Having changed from a plus 4 trad to a new plus 8 the morgan experience is very much still alive with very stiff suspension and no traction control so I have no doubt the new plus 4 will be a lot of fun with no connection to normal sports cars !

Pete and others, I feel attuned to a lot of what you say although I have never connected to the byegone age bit and I don't think that I have ever thought about it. I do wholeheartedly agree that there is something very special about having a Morgan, just looking at it will do sometimes and using it makes us smile. I don't particularly care that it is British : I am more interested in the small factory, skilled workforce, beautiful design bit whist I recognize other good automobile design too. I'll certainly ask Sarah at BHM if I can try a new P4 and I may be pleasantly surprised but I enjoy both my new one and my Roadster and just think to myself wow, how did that happen.

The new platform cars are definitely lacking a lot of the traditional Morgan DNA and that’s a shame. I think the company will be successful in attracting a new clientele. But will they have the same level of commitment and love for the marque? I think not and many will be looking for a curious new toy to enjoy short term before going back to their Porsche’s and Aston Martin’s. That’s the danger in the new strategy - but perhaps Morgan have no choice.
Despite the rise of EV’s I don’t see the ICE slipping out of peoples affections. The ICE has so much charisma compared to an EV. I see enthusiasm for ICE classics as likely to rise rather than decline.
