I'll bet that's a really nice trip without the ordeal by food and no petri dishes grin2 .

It’s been on my bucket list for a while. Mrs F refuses point blank because:
1) It has shared bathrooms
2) Coal is dirty

Curiously, when we are at the stables with our horses we are surrounded by poo and other effluent and she is prepared to pee in a bucket if the need arises. This is not a problem to her. Feminine logic is beyond me at times.

Yes it really appeals to me as it's a smaller scale thing and more in keeping with your type of cruises, I would have a problem with Heather and the shared loo also but like your good lady if caught on a long country walk can disappear in the undergrowth no problem. Will we ever understand them, I have realised they are unfathomable to me but maybe that's part of the attraction.
If she got smutty from the chimney she would not be impressed at all so it would take a bit of persuasion, I really like the feel of this trip.

We have done quite a few cruises. The key is selecting the right cruise line and itinerary. You can get to some superb locations.
Cunard cruises rank as some of our best with visits to S Helena, Spitzbergen with a Captain’s discretionary detour to an extra fiord,. Crossing the Equator...I am no longer a Polywog having kissed the fish and been dunked in the pool. Dining choice, too is important. We always go for shared tables with 8/10 people and had some great dinners with characters and fun. Never any issues with anyone. We still keep in touch with some.
We don’t like the bigger ships though.

I'm quite happy that lots of people like cruises, help keep the roads less congested for Mog driving (or should that be cruising ?) laugh2

"Cruising is a social activity that primarily consists of driving a car. ... Cruising is distinguished from regular driving by the social and recreational nature of the activity, which is characterized by an impulsively random, often aimless course. A popular route (or "strip") is often the focus of cruising."

Talking from experience Peter?

Of Butlins or cruises?

I didnt know Butlins had camps in Alaska, Caribbean, China, Australia, South Africa, Arabian Gulf, India, Mediterranean, Panama Canal and Beyond, South America the Falkland, Cape Horn, Antarctic, Baltic Sea etc etc

That said you havn't really touched a nerve there are plenty of "never tried it" who talk the same way.

I simply don't like people around me or doing anything in a group: I'm not a "club" person. I also suffer from mild claustrophobia which has worsened with age.
I get very anxious if I feel I can't get away from any potential hazard: I don't like airport buildings or flying much, either.
So, my idea of travel is to drive to a nice hotel, explore the local area, and move on to the next stop. Just Management and me.
We went round one of the Cruise ships in Southampton some years ago, and frankly just wanted to get away.
The longest sea trip I've made was the overnight crossing from Jersey to Portsmouth. That was more than enough.

Thank you all for the somewhat varied replies most of which didn't address the pollution issue but it has been a glorious and highly educational thread drift for which TM is famed clap

For those of you that cruise "carry on cruising".

But if you do, remember to wear a face mask, the ships create a lot of pollution. Not a lot of people know that.

Simple solution to the pollution - kayaks / canoes are probably cheaper and certainly, when used correctly, more healthy!
