Whilst John was oiling his floor I was trying to bring some semblance of shine to the tail pipes, they had become very dirty.
It as a multi step process.....
Step 1: Muck off spray and hot water
Step 2: Tar spot remover, several applications.
Step 3: Polish and inspect
Step 4: repeat Step 2 and 3 several times until all tar spots have been removed.
Step 5: Take a photo...

There is some pitting, for perfection I should remove the end pipes and mechanically polish.
But then it wouldn't be a bodge.

Having laughed at John’s linseed oil saga, I can now admire the gleam of Peter’s tailpipes. (No sniggering please)

However Peter, can I suggest you adopt Adrian’s (AJSki2Fly) exhaust polishing strategy, as first seen on Rosie, his original and lovely Plus 8? (I wonder who owns that now?)

He took the exhaust system off and polished it front to back!!
Hardly a bodge, but it did look magnificent!

I don't have Adrians slightly OCD attention to detail.
I can admire the results, but would never go to such levels...

And as a bodger mechanic I'd probably never get it all back together properly!

did I mention in the odds & sods drawer on the work bench the old screws etc were placed in old kitchen drawer cutlery trays. This has 3 effects.
1. it gives all the little bits small swimming pools of oil.
2. the oil goes under the cutlery trays so they slide nicely about.
3. you run out of kitchen towel very easily, this good as an excuse for a drive though.

Peter the pipes look good. My excuse is that if I got down there to do that I couldn't get up again.

Mine was a tongue in cheek suggestion, Peter.

For TMers who never saw Adrian’s Plus 8, it had near concours levels of detailing. (DaveW would probably concur).

Whoever owns it now, has a stunning car.

Bud, it was a beauty of a car. Polished to an inch of it's life.
And fairly fast up Shelsey Walsh as I think Graham will confirm.

Anyway here is a picture of todays efforts after the clean up and waiting for the paint to dry fully. The OCD bug must be getting to me as I took the head off the pick axe to paint inside it!
The oiled shaft is out of shot.

swmbo commented that now the pick axe was so nice I could lend it to my daughter's partner who is redoing their garden!!

Another few years and it will be a challenge for me!
Should I win the lottery I'll have a hydraulic lift let into the floor, so I can sit comfortably on a chair to do things like polish the tail pipes and detail the wheel hubs....!!
