Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone has experience changing steering rack gaiter on a Roadster 3.7. So it's a Quaife rack and it's on the passenger side so it shouldn't be that hard, or 😜

There was an earlier thread recently on this. It might be worth a look

Just had both mine replaced under warranty. Although I obviously didn't do the work myself, I understand both rack clamps have to be removed and the steering column connection to rack if replacing drivers side. The new gaiter(s) can then be slid over and secured. Remember to replace any of the thin grease that may have escaped from split gaiter. The trick is to re-secure everything in the original position so that steering wheel is correct position for straight ahead. Tracking shouldn't be affected as you don't need to touch track rods. Both mine were changed in under two hours.

I had already obtained a pair of universal fit gaiters and offered them to dealer to use if they were found to be superior to OE. Was told they found them more supple and fitted mine giving me their OE ones as spares.

Hi again, I think and hope it is enough to dismantle the steering clamp on the passenger side to replace the gaiter on that side.

Richard, I suspect one of mine is just starting to weep again & I'm suspicious of the OE quality

Could you kindly let me have the details of the alternative you used

I had one split just outside of warranty ( late 2015 car) - 1 was stiff and brittle ( split) the other was supple and ok. I went down the universal route as mentioned by Richard - I fitted it myself and it wasn't a bad job to do. Just a case of take time ( and photos to be sure I guess) - its simply dismantling and re-assembly. It surprised me how well it all went - well within the scope of a keen DIY Morgan owner.

I used a "first line" universal kit Part number FSG4000. About £10 for 2 on ebay.

I took my plus4 to a local garage for a new steering gator. I think he charged me £120 for a universal gaitor, labour and an MOT. So I suspect if you have a good local garage near you they would happily do it for a reasonable cost.

It's in the post above Jon - car builder solutions.

Just remembered they also offer a version with a grease nipple to top up lubricant.
