A solution for spare relays (2018 Plus 4)

Reading various stories of Morgan owners who have had failed relays, which of course happen when most inconvenient, I decided I ought to carry spares.
This involved a) identifying what relays, b) where to get them and c) where to keep them.

Now I am lucky in that I have a 2018 build Plus 4 (so this should apply to all Plus 4 from 2014 onwards), there are only three relays, two of which are the same and all three are under the bonnet in an aluminium box with the fuses and ECU.

a) There are two diode protected changeover relays (type RY18) for the Fuel system and the Immobiliser, the other relay is for the wipers (search using 191955531).
b) Sourcing a changeover relay was easy £3,
The wiper relay was more tricky but got a used VW Number 19 relay 191 955 531 for £6
c) Where to keep them? I purchased two 9 pin relay base holders for £5 and these slid in either side of the existing ones.

So for a total of £14 I now have spares being carried ‘in-situ’.

What a neat solution.

I keep two spares in the tool tray and one in the glove box!
The only breakdown I’ve had was a failed fuel pump relay. Fortunately, I was carrying a spare.

Important they are diode relays for any cars that employ an ECU. Equally important to wire the polarity sensitive relay coil of such correctly if this is part of an additional/after-market installation.

For what is worth I have a large diagram of the relay connections folded in the glove box,in case it is dark so I can swop the relay will little light.

Great idea, labelling them. Incidentally, Are your fuse boxes A & B labelled the wrong way round by the factory, as I have seen on a couple of other GDIs.?

Also be aware at least on a 2006 Roadster the relays also supply power to the ECU. Mine failed but lights etc worked , only the ECU wasn't working & the starter wouldn't turn over. . Despite having spares in the car neither I or the two mechanics who looked at it dreamt that it was the relay. we though it was the ECU or the immobiliser.
