I am just about to fit my second pair of Excelsior Comp H in 4.00 x 19. The first set lasted around 4000 miles, which is two years use for me. I live in a mountain village in the south of France during the summer (usually but been "Boris'd" this year). Both roads leading up to the village at around 2500 feet altitude, have multiple hairpin bends, so good adhesion very desirable. The original Avons were horrendous, tucking under and very sudden transition into high slip angles. The car was transformed by the Excelsiors. They seem slightly less prone to storage flats than the Blockleys, which I have used on other cars but that may be down to the low weight of the M3W. The inevitable corollary is that steering is a little heavier, especially as they get worn but they also reduce kick back compared with the Avons and that was especially noticeable before the steering comfort kit was fitted on my early Mk.1 car (March 2012).

I had 18 inch wheels made and fitted 18 inch Continental tyres which are TUBELESS. Much safer tyres , and more clearance round the guards. Geoff

Although a little further off topic, has anyone tried the 4.50x19 Blockley or Excelsior tyres? Likely to be made to fit under the mudguards I'd have thought, only 1kg heavier than the 4.00x19 (I asked Blockley), but should gove a useful improvement in stability and grip. Might give a pair a go at some point, but just in case someone had tried already....?!
