This is what I use, fairly standard 3/8 drive with a T bar and a box spanner over the end for a bit more leverage.
You can't get it all the way out with this on the front plugs but you can get it cracked loose, then remove the T bar and use the extension as a "screwdriver" to remove it by leaning it slightly to one side.
Caveat. If the plugs have not been out for some time, they can be a bit of a bu**er so take your time and presoak with releasing fluid. (See other threads on this subject)
Also if they are very tight sometimes there is a tendency to force the socket away from the upright position while you're straining to get enough torque hence my box spanner extension.
You can break a plug by doing that. (immortal cliche, don't ask me how I know)
You don't need to remove the bonnet but it is a bit of a fiddle especially the front plug.
BTW, when I do remove the bonnet, I undo the front screws not the back.
The back, as I understand it, screw into the wooden frame whereas the front are CSK machine screws with nuts. I don't like re-tightening screws into wood on numerous occasions but then I do probably take my bonnet off more than many for various other jobs. I also replaced the front machine screws with CSK socket heads.
