Some stories in the press about why the UK won't be joining the EU vaccine programme.

First they demanded we stopped our research, later rescinded, then told us we would get the amount of vaccine they determined, when they determined, without being part of the process.

How true this is, is debatable, but if any of that is true, it just reinforces the EU control freak stereotype.

I volunteer for a local talking news paper for the blind. We read articles form the local papers once a week & this is then sent by USB sticks or via an internet link.
At times the use of English by the journalists is dreadful but yesterday they excelled themselves.
The article as about Flatford Mill and that the hostel based inside the mill is letting the space for staycations to key workers. It proudly suggested that from the mill you could see the river Deben flowing past. This would be quite a trick as the mill is on the river Stour and to get to the Deben you need to cross the River Orwell and travel c 25 miles. So much for local knowledge.

Oh dear, double jeopardy. Oh dear worse, McDonalds in the mirror. Well that will reduce the reported rates if nothing else will. (other than putting the figures through your best mate who is about as dodgy as can be)

I was once in February in Appleton Wisconsin. The guys I were working with wanted to take me on the weekend to watch the Green Bay Packers. I decided freezing at -25c for 4 hrs with a plastic cheese on my head wasn't my thing & went to Milwaukee to se some micro breweries & Hooters.

Not sure there'll be any immune system experts here but I'm scratching my head as to why we're led to understand that catching Covid 19 doesn't seem to result in reliable immunity but various vaccines are seemingly producing a valuable immune response.

Is it just a case of the medical establishment playing down immunity to prevent wholesale abandonment of control measures by those less likely to be severely affected .... but the vaccine developers wanting to 'big-up' their product ..... in other words, 'glass half empty/full' viewpoints creating a perceived rather than real difference

Or is there a real medical difference between the immune response of a vaccine compared to the 'real thing'?

It's too early in the game to know the answers. Consider the fact that if you catch the flu one year, you aren't immune to it the next year. The same is true with the common cold. We might end up having to get annual vaccinations against the COVID, just like the flu.

It's not surprising to see results from the vaccine being different than results from the disease. Think about Polio, there's a world of difference between surviving Polio and getting the shot.

Edwin ... yep, just speculating really (as we all are really when it comes to this situation ) .... have a friend who was one of the last people to catch polio in the UK as the vaccine was being introduced and has lived with the consequences ever since .... not sure if his level of resulting immunity is any different from that conferred by the vaccine .... the outcome, however, has been markedly different.

But for someone young and fit who catches covid 19 and has few or no symptoms (and may not even know they had it) ... why would the immunity level the disease leaves be different from that left by a vaccine .... if indeed it is?

I think the benefits of all this has been to raise awareness of hygiene.

In our local market you can buy cooked meats and cheese. These products are handled using latex gloves, but the same gloves also take the money, which to me is barmy.

At our local grocery store, it's noticeable that almost everything now is prepacked.

So the future will undoubtedly be less cash dependant, and those who sell without making obvious efforts to be hygienic may not survive.

A friend of mine wants to meet up at a greasy spoon cafe for a bacon sarnie one morning, but quite honestly, right now I don't think this is a safe thing to do.

And clearly immunity is going to vary person to person, as will benefits of future vaccines. A woman I worked with had a flu jab a few years ago, and suffered months of leg numbness straight after. The NHS denied a connection but that was weird. So even the vaccine could impact some people.
