Calum, you have outdone yourself! Great write up for the Ohlins, are you sure you are not employed by Ohlin? Well done!

Calum, I will follow your example and have ordered a set of Ohlins. Long wait time since they are all custom builds for Ohlin.

The contact person has been very nice and professional. I will be making the bushings and doing whatever modifications necessary to get them to fit properly.

Maybe an early September install for me since I will use the OEM shocks for this season it appears and this winter will tune the Ohlins.

You folks talked me into it, so I took the plunge and ordered a set of Ohlins. Well, that, and a recent ride down a really crappy road helped secure the decision!

Thanks 2Sharp for the link to mike.hensley@ohlinsusa.com. He's been very responsive and helpful. There is a fairly long lead time at the moment, probably into mid to late August due to Sweden being on vac in July. He mentioned he had 3 M3W orders from us folks.

Mike was a bit confused about the size of the mounting bolts front and rear - he thought they were 1/2". I confirmed to him that they were in fact M12 bolts, and sent him the pages from the parts manual confirming sizes. That should help eliminate any machining as he said he could provide 12mm bushings. So should only have to do some shimming with M12 washers to adjust the width. If you have an order in with him, you may want to remind him to adjust the order to make sure he provides 12mm bushings.

His last note back to me: "The fronts will come with 12mm ID and 40mm thick. The rears will come with sleeves to insert that will reduce the ID from 14mm to 12mm. The thickness will be 20mm, so you will still need some spacers to make up the difference."

M12 bolts definitely. I don’t think most people measure the bolts as they just measure the shocks and I believe the factory shocks have 1/2” holes so you have slop.

I promise you will love the ohlins! Yes they take a while to get.

Calum, didn't you machine washers with a part that went into the sleeve area acting as the sleeve and washer all in one? Pretty nice idea, although the washer and sleeve would turn together.

I didn't machine them, they were supplied with the shocks to fit the bracket sizes that I gave to BG Motorsport but yes they are a combined sleeve and spacer which does make them easier to handle than say putting a sleeve through the bearing and a simple loose spacer each side.

What material are they made out of? Alu or Stainless?

Mine are stainless. Given the relatively small contact area against the bearing I don't think I would want to use aluminium.

Thanks Calum, would have been my choice as well.

304 or better?
