Morning all,
This may sound silly but does any one know what size spanner is needed for brake bleed nipples?

Thanks chaps......

Not a silly question at all, the larger ones were always 7/16AF and the smaller ones (like the rears on a mini) were 5/16AF.

Given changes in manufacture and perhaps more importantly the location of manufacturers they could well be Metric.

I use a ring or ring end of a combo whenever possible, soak in release oil the day before can save grief, they only need nipping up but some murder the things!

On my 1972, a 10mm spanner fits perfectly. I have a ' bleed nipple' spanner - almost a full ring but has a cut out to slot over a bleed pipe.

Somehow I've never got around to getting one of these.

I use a ring spanner or socket to crack the bleed nipple loose but not open, then fit the bleed pipe and use an open-ender on the nipple during the bleeding process, then once the pipe is off I snug down with a ring - but as Colin points out, they don't need a big heave.

Thanks chaps your input is great as normal, I have a bleed nipple spanner on order.

One last question on this:
Should I be unlucky enough to break a nipple what would be the size of the replacement (I didn't know that so many sizes were out there) I have a 1997 +4.

Thanks again for your help thumbs

. Surprised at that normally find a 11mm nearer to a 7/16.

My rear bleed nipples are 3/8 Unf with a 10mm hex head. I have 4 pot Hispec on the front, not sure of the thread size but again the hex head is 10mm.
