I HATE the gel battery on the S1. Went through 3 in my 3 years of ownership at £140 each time. A conventional battery is a serious improvement on the S2!

Hope your problem gets sorted quickly. Sounds like a starter motor solenoid relay. When my gel batteries died, tyou wouldn't even get the click...

Also - could just be the 20 Amp starter fuse. Worth checking it. Usually when my S1 didn't start it was this that had blown.

Hi had the same problem with my mk1 earlier in the year.First check you have the 20amp fuse fitted then try jump leads, if it still clicks you need a new starter motor.I tried all this but the only way it would start was by pushing it. I had a new starter fitted at Millers in High Wycombe and would recommend them highly for there advice a good quick and reasonable priced job. Ring 01494 448158 and talk to Ann

Yes, from a 20amp to a 30amp. Found this out within a week of ownership as the car had blown 3 fuses in that time.

However, when the fuse blew, the starter wasn't even clicking, so I'd doubt that the issue is related to this and sounds more like a starter motor issue or a bad earth as has been suggested beforehand.

What I was saying if it starts with jump leads the starter motor is o.k. If it still clicks you need a new starter motor.

Mine started like that (on an S1), I kept blaming the battery, then fuses started blowing. Some say the 15 amp fuse should be 20 amp- but the problem for me that the starter motor was sticking. Ended up fitting a new one and everything else was hunky dorey.
