Having lived with my DRL's for a little while now I can recommend dedicated DRL bulbs in with the indicators. The bulbs here are quoted as 800 lumens each so very (very) roughly a 60 watt conventional bulb. The lamps have the additional benefit of forward pointing reflectors too so offer a very bright point light source when viewed directly from in front.

Anyway here are a couple of pics I had in my phone. I’ve bodged the DRL to be on with the main head light (dipped) for comparison. It’s difficult to show the real intensity.

Doesn't this arrangement obscure the visibility and effectiveness of the indicators? I have noticed that even a switch to clear indicator lenses on some cars seems to reduce their effectiveness, especially in bright sunshine.

Not really. There is a bit of electronics inside the bulbs that switches off the white DRL when the indicators are activated just leaving the orange indicator to flash normally. It looks quite normal. I think a few modern cars do this now.

Thanks for clarification Roger. I must keep up with the technology! I have also just realised that my latest Volvo has a similar arrangement so should have known. Probably just didn't expect to see it on a Trad.

Frankly I am sure dlrs help but they are out there

If they can't see a bright yellow car (and one or two haven't) then DRLs, dipped headlights etc. will not help.
Philip (sospan) posted a link to some research (by RAF?) regarding observation and brain filling in what is seen, particularly with rapid head movement, which I suspect may be contributory to your RTC John. Not only that, but screen pillars are so much thicker nowadays, that it is essential to move one's eye view in order to see around such obstacles. Frustrating, but what is taught now is "make progress" which reduces time at junctions, and ensuring the road one is about to join is definitely clear...

Fitted direct swaps before and after.

The new bulbs are "really bright white" as opposed the the old "less bright warm white".

Just for the picky the headlight brightness is the same its just my camera angles.

Now it is my intention to transfer the bullet lights live live to an "ignition on only" live so lights are always on when ignition on and then also to fit the gizmo I found on ebay (earlier in thread) which senses dipped headlight on voltage and then reduces power to the new DRL bulbs.to comply with DRL legal requirements

In terms of an ignition on live take off point any suggestions for an easy to get at scotch lock wire?
Cost so far £11

Keep you posted

Thanks I am really looking for a take off under the bonnet. I am going to look at the small fuse box on the bulkhead on the drivers side. before I start messing around (not good at electrics) can anyone give me a pointer if that fuse box as an ignition-on only permanent live?

I have never understood why DRLs are only at the front of the car. These days they can be so bright that many going into tunnels don't realise that they have not turned on their headlights. Consequently they can be in the dark without tail lights.
