Shackleton did however return himself and every one of his crew from their ill-fated Antarctic adventure. If you have not read this saga, Alfred Lansing's book is a complication of many journals and records and is the best version IMO.
However, many of the crew did die shortly after their successful return to England in WW I; as infantry adapted to the then modern invention of machine guns... "War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" ~Frankie
