I carried out a Google Search, asking the question "What is the point of Facebook?"

This is the best response, in my opinion.....

Maybe I'm just asocial, but what's the point of Facebook?

I've been on Facebook for about six months now. Reconnected with a few old friends. Once the newness wore off, however, I pretty much stopped posting or reading other's posts. I've only got maybe three status posts in the last six weeks or so (other than blog posts that FB automatically posts).

I mean, I don't care that you're bummed because the Lakers lost. Your kid's status as an honor student at So and So Middle School means nothing in my life. I really don't give a crap what you had for dinner, unless you post a recipe and wine recommendation, which you can't do even if you wanted. And I really, really, really don't give a damn about your latest Mafia wars hit or, gawd help us, your latest Farmville exploit. (BTW, here is a great collection of inane FB posts. And here is a post on how to hide the Mafia war-type status posts.)

My latest (and possibly last) status post reads:

Why are we here? What's the point of this form of existence? (FB, not Earth.)

I am quite serious about this. I'm really not convinced by Facebook.
But I am famously asocial (maybe even anti-social), so YMMV.

I use a range of social media apart from TM. Facebook for keeping up with friends and happenings in the local community, Twitter for finding out what's going on nationally - it's usually well ahead of MSM although you do have to sift out the rumours from the fact, Reddit for more in-depth discussions on stuff, I like the philosophy threads especially.

If you like having a circle of friends and acquaintances with whom you can exchange news, views, and information then just like TM they provide a useful service especially in these days of non-existent social contact.

The way I see it, people like 'Professor Bainbridge' who complain about social media feeding them crap they don't want to see are simply demonstrating their lack of understanding on how to use the applications effectively. I just see it as another of those weaknesses like lack of numeracy or technical literacy that people seem so keen to flaunt as if it's somehow a good thing that they don't know how to do sums or work a computer. Weird.

It's all about choices, I find Pistonheads pretty dire and visited once and decided it wasn't for me just like Flop Gear and the other three monkeys over on Netfix.

Just like TM if you apply the right filters Facebook is a good way of learning something new and meeting Morgan friends and reuniting with old one's.
It's not for the antisocials of this world for sure.

Agree completely. It's like a badge of honour "look how stupid I am, I can't even use the TV remote".....

I see everything as a tool. If I want to fix my car, I'll use a spanner or socket set. If I want to speak to my Mum, I use my smartphone, if I want to catch up with what my mates are doing, or organise a meet up I'll use FB. As my Dad always said, use the right tool for the job.

I wouldn't try and undo a nut by smacking it with my phone, just and I wouldn't try and order a pizza with a screwdriver.....

I do thoroughly enjoy Facebook. It has helped me to reconnect with friends I've been out of touch with for years. It also helps with keeping up with what's happening in my family (my family is huge and scattered all over the globe). It is also a place to meet up with friends in the local music scene which has been mostly shut down due to Covid. I also use it to gain knowledge on things like the Triumph GT3 which I am hoping to own one day.

Lots of benefits for me. Maybe not for others. You get out what you put in.

Totally agree and I wouldn't want Professor Bainbridge (William D. Warren Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law in Los Angeles) teaching my kids. He set himself up to be considered a Dinosaur.
