Unlikely, as the UK won't prevent it's citizens from returning home.

Another Perspective on the Risk from COVD.

According to NHS data quoted by the Telegraph, more than twice as many under 60s died in road crashes as those under 60 without underlying health issues... 955 under 60s died on the roads, 438 died from COVID.
Who seriously considers that they will die in a car accident?
Who locks themselves away because they may die in a RTA?

Looking at all deaths in 2020, up to December 23rd, 45,770 died with underlying health conditions and only 1,979 were viewed as "previously healthy".
Of the 1,979 just 388 were between 40 and 59, 44 between 20 and 39 and only 6 were younger than 19.

Why are we so panicked?

Another question: there is a proposal to test all school kids before they go back to school. Why not just vaccinate them and the teachers and they they can back on with life.

Yes, we need social distancing, face masks and hand washing, at risk people should manage their own risk and shelter as needed, but the closing down of business and society is not justified, in my view. NHS management is becoming the tail that is wagging the Government dog, it seems to me.

This 'underlying health conditions' thing bothers me a bit.

Let's take the example of a 63 year old with a typical underlying condition - Heart Disease. Their life is almost certainly going to be shortened by it, maybe as much as 10 years, so their life expectancy is probably 68 years rather than 78.

They go for a drive in their car and are involved in a no-fault accident which results in their death. Do we ascribe the cause of death to Heart disease?

Or let's say they survive and are taken to hospital where they contract sepsis and die after a spell in ICU. Heart Disease?

So why would we, if they contract C19 and die, would we suggest that it was the heart disease that killed them and not C19?

I also note that Toby Young (writes for the Telegraph, the Mail, and others) has been circulating anti-NHS commentary suggesting that the NHS isn't under as much threat as claimed and that there are plenty of spare beds. He accompanies the message with this photograph:

[Linked Image]

Which is a clear implication that this is a picture of an empty NHS ward. Except that it isn't. It's a picture from 2012. Of the hospital beds at Guantanamo Bay.

Dishonest spin, or legitimate journalistic licence?

Some rambly thoughts:

We broke up at 2.45pm on the 17th. We got the message from the DfE about testing the kids at 2.00pm. We were offered no financial or physical resources to help us to undertake the testing.

To put things into context, I believe they sent in 800 troops to test the Drivers stuck at Dover. They managed to clear the backlog in a couple of days. There were 5000 Drivers. We have 2000 kids and 500 staff.

The instructions from the DfE last term were to try and keep Teachers at least 2 metres away from students at all times. We spent a fortune restructuring classrooms, creating 'safe' zones and installing screens to keep Teachers safe at work (although wearing masks in classrooms was not considered appropriate)

The DfE have now suggested that Teachers do the testing, which would be difficult to do from 2 metres away. They have also suggested getting volunteers and parents involved to do the testing, although it takes at least 4 weeks to get DBS clearance - at busy times, much longer. However, we'd need to be very careful with 'liability' if one of the volunteers/parents gets infected - it should not fall to the school to cover these risks.

Since September, we have had 100's of students/staff testing positive. It has only been the teachers who have been affected seriously - the kids have felt a bit 'fluey' but nothing else. Only hospitalisations have been staff (2). We had to close school for a week as we had over 100 teachers ill or isolating which meant it impossible to cover the classes.

Kids are super spreaders - they are infecting each other and their families rapidly which has wider implications for the community, NHS and the economy. Unsurprisngly, there has been a massive increase in infection rates since Schools returned in September.

Vaccinating kids and staff as a priority would quickly drop the R rate, and reduce the risks to the population and economy.

If my parents (89 & 90) are anything to go by, it will have a much greater beneficial impact on the NHS than vaccinating the crumblies too.

Mum & Dad have almost become hermits and are being veery careful. Their highest risks are when I transport them to medical appointments. This coming Saturday's trip is to take them for their CoVid Vaccination.

Agreed. It is much easier for retired People to isolate as they have no need to go to a workplace (albeit more frustrating if my parents are anything to go by!).

Good luck for the vaccinations - my Dad had his on the 18th (Worcester) and has had no ill effects. His second jab is on the 8th.

Thank you. Hoping I can drop them at a door and go round the block or park in a side street until they phone me for collection. Parking at Nottingham QMC is a nightmare. As things stand, Mum thinks she can walk from the door to the clinic (she broke a leg in 14 months ago and recovery is rather slow) which will make things a lot easier.
