I just read that in all new Golf VIII the touch screen has to be replaced. It has failed in almost all new Golf VIII. There is a new control module and a software update. But what I find outrageous: There is a bar on the touch screen for the radio volume and for the temperature setting / air conditioning. These are not illuminated. This is not improved. It remains unlit. If you drive at night, you can't change the radio volume and you can't adjust the temperature. What stupid economy measures. I would never buy a car like this.
All conventional knobs and switches have been removed. There is no longer intuitive operation. Last year 300 drivers were killed in Germany because they were distracted from driving. These were not only mobile users but also people with these newfangled cars. You have to go into submenus to change the simplest things. How nice it is to drive a classical Trad Morgan.

These designs on modern vehicles are potential accidents waiting to happen IMO.I cannot understand how vehicles such as Tesla which has a central iPad device is classed as safe?. If that doesn't distract a driver from the road ahead beats me.

Not sure I'd classify my Plus 4's dash layout as particularly ergonomic in it's design but I agree about touch screens. When I was in the Fire Service I attended countless RTCs where the driver had been on their mobile device just before the collision. I'm not sure there's much difference between a mobile device and a touchscreen on a dash in terms of the attention they require to operate them. Probably a lot cheaper to manufacture than fitting knobs and dials though.

The touchscreens do seem to make a mockery of the handheld device laws, I can't see any difference between touching a phone screen or a built in touchscreen. At least you can put the mobile phone on a shoulder and two hands on the wheel Obviously one handed whilst drinking coffee... I think with the advance in voice control, fiddling with knobs will be a thing of the past.

I can't reach my screen. Say "screen" several times slowly. Sounds daft, doesn't it?

Just turning cars on and off is a pain When I need to move all the cars on the drive, it’s a real headache. One needs the clutch pushing on, one it’s the brake pedal and I can never remember which is which
And on my dads Merc, I have absolutely no control over the lights. I can’t see a way of turning them off or just having the side lights if I want to overriding the auto sensors

I'm not familiar with the VW touchscreen. But I had the touchscreen in my 2009 Jag XJ and now in my 2016 Jag F-Pace. Both cars had/have the basic knobs / buttons for basic operations. So the touchscreen doesn't distract you at all (at least not me).
And I prefer a thousand times a touchscreen (that works, of course, not one with apparent problems as the one you say in the new VW Golf VIII) to the pealeolithic's rotary commands that used to equip (and still does) many models. Everytime I rent a nice BMW, Mercedes, Audi... and I have to enter an address in the navigation system, I remember how easy it is to do so with my Jag touchscreen with deployable virtual keyboard, while I rotate this silly rotary command to select the letters...
Touchscreen? Yes IMHO, but I totally agrre with the basic knobs and buttons available to avoid distractions during driving.

I had an E class as a rental recently. Nearly everything was by touchscreen / mouseboard. I found it very annoying & dangerous.

I would love to go back to non electric windows and a starting handle. I was never let down with my Morris Minors but the suspension did come through the floor, but that's another matter.
Why is there only one monopolies commission??
