I just ran across a section on GOMOG covering greasing of pre-2000 front ends which has a section on how and why to make sure that grease flows between the damper plate and the stub axle shelf. Newer Mogs have some channels cut into the plate or shelf for grease to pass through but the older one apparently do not. This article is the first time that I have come across any note on the need and how to assure grease gets into this spot.

I was not able to get a screw driver blade between the plate and the shelf until I used a short bar to lever off the cross bar up against the bottom of the damper bracket/bolt head. A space opened up between the plate and the shelf into which I could just force a screw driver blade. Two pumps with the grease gun and I heard the crack of grease moving out the space. It was also visible. The reservoir of the KP was already full from recent greasing so it didn't take much move grease between the plate and shelf once a small space between them had been opened.

Does anyone else specifically make take this step to assure grease gets between the damper plate and the stub axle shelf?

The answer I have discovered - very much as per Lorne Goodman on GoMog - is not to pry as I really couldn't find a suitable point for leverage other than steering arms.

LG recommends a "well placed jack" topped by a wooden pillar of about 6" length to press op underneath the inboard end of the damper plate. Weight of car is already securely on two inboard axle stands, so this method locks into place leaving me both hands to handle the grease gun. After that, no problem!

So Dave, for those who must pry, I still wonder how long is your lever and what is your fulcrum?
