The mud guard over the rear wheel has given me issues with rattles and such so I removed and attempted to re-attach. However one of the hex bolts will not screw in - due to the threaded insert in the rear chassis that holds the guard having fallen off. So there is a hole now but no threads and too big. So I have bought too many threaded inserts to count in M8 size and although they work for the bolt they are either too big or too small for the hole in the chassis. Driving me crazy. Anyone have any ideas or a part number??

Have you tried a Rivnut? They make them in a few sizes in regard to the body/ outside diameter.

Buying the tool can be prohibitively expensive for one job. It may work out that you have a mechanic or machinist that is local and may have an assortment to work through some trial and error.

I had the same problem and a Rivnut sorted it out. Didn't have the tool so I compressed it using some threaded bar, a thick washer or 2 and a nut.

Tighten the nut against the washers until the Rivnut compresses and feels solid. Remove threaded bar.

Job done.

Because of the tigh cramped spaces in which the rivnuts are used you might need more than one tool unless you can find a pneumatic adjustable torque model.

Given the number of Rivnuts used on the M3W and their propensity to come loose, the technique suggested by Dab of Oppo works well esp given they are always in locations where you cannot access the normal tool. There are YouTube videos showing how to do it.

OhioM3W is this the mounting you have for factory fit rear mudguard?

[Linked Image]

If so and you have for some reason an 8mm hole in the swing arm mounted bracket it bolts to you will need to use an M6 rivnut requiring an 8.9mm clearance hole. Earlier after market factory mudguard kits as I fitted to my 2016 model used four M5 fittings directly to swing arm and I used M5 rivnuts in preference to factory recommended drilling and tapping.

It occurs to me you may be referring to fitting of the rear wheel tray (not mudguard) which as can be seen employs M5 captive fixings into the ash frame. If one of these has let go it may be the hole remaining is now too large as evidenced by the 8mm hole you mention. An oversized M6 fixing may be needed unless you can somehow fill the hole with artificial wood and re-fix OE M5 insert.

Can anyone send a link to a part or video? I see a lot of rivnut tools but can’t be sure which one will work for me - with an M8 bolt

It depends on the space in which you need to put the tool. There are some pretty tight places that rivnuts were installed probably before the body was installed and thus making getting to the darn near impossible.
