As relays have already been checked , I am with Budster and Max 5 on this: ignition key transponder or inertia switch..

Thanks for your comments. I have checked the voltage at the pump and only seem to be getting 4.7 volts. I would have expected this to be 12.
I have checked all 3 keys and the transponder is in place.
The relays I have checked are a row of 4 in the aluminum fuse box under the bonnet.
I have pushed in the red button on the inertia switch and it seems to engaged.
I guess my next check is to run a direct feed to the pump and see if it runs. Should I do this by running a wire from the battery to the pump or is there an easier way?
Again, thanks for the help, please keep it coming as I am at a bit of a loss here!

Mine once had exactly the same symptoms, I did all the things talked about here and then tried the spare key, away it went, no problems since

Try one of the other keys.
There is always the possibility that the immobiliser pick up next to the ignition switch has slipped (although doubtful if the car has been stationary).

Could the relay be faulty. I know you checked but try swapping it for one of the others. In the Roadster at least they are interchangeable. The low voltage seems to suggest it works but not totally.

Mucky contacts on the reed faces within the relay, lack of regular switching & damp air in winter doesn't help

Exactly it is what happened to my S1 Roadster. What I didn't realise is that the fuel pump relay powers the ECU. That failed so whilst the dash lit up nothing happened.

For the uninitiated can you tell me where the fuel pump/ECU relay is located?

Many thanks.

John
