I was discussing parking on a hill & leaving it on gear with handbrake on. Reading the Highway Code it advises if facing uphill turn the wheels to the right ( if on LH side of the road ) & in first gear. If facing down hill turn the wheels to left & put it in reverse. This does not seem right to me, if the car did move it would be trying to turn the engine backwards. I have been in the habit of leaving it in gear opposite to the code advice. Can anyone explain the code reasoning regarding gear selection?

If the ignition were accidentally left on no chance of it firing and running off ??? .... seems a bit random. Logically reverse would be the best option as it tends to be the lowest gear in the box .... so would be trying to turn the engine over fastest giving most 'engine braking' .... just carry a brick 🙂

I thought the intention was
1. Steer the ca into the kerb. 2. Do not run the engine in a direction of a bump start (so if facing down then reverse)

Bet you none of the "AI" in the modern self-parking cars has a clue about that in it's software setup!

I get the steering the car into the kerb bit but maybe the first or reverse gear choice is not so important as Saabs used to require the car to be in reverse before you could get the key out.

Three safety measures are better than less! I remember a handbrake cable failing but managed to park on a slope using the kerb and gearbox to hold the car. Timing the steering with a hill start was ok. I always leave the car in gear as well as hand-braked as a double check. At home in the garage I leave both free on the Mog as it is level and prevents brake seizing.

I remember a handbrake cable failing Yep, I was waiting at temporary traffic lights at the top of a hill a few weeks ago - car started to creep backwards on the handbrale, so gave it an extra tug - big twang and lost it all completely. Almost lost the clutch too by the time the lights turned green......
