While messing with the flasher relay, I noticed the black box located under said relay. the box appears to be an add-on and seems to be connected to the relay indicated (which also looks like an add-on).

I was wondering if it may have something to do with the engine cooling fan retrofit? I'm sure someone here will know!

Mine is a 2012 car by the way.

I had a look into the black box a number of years ago and it had 3 or 4 relays in it. No idea what they are for so I left it alone. It was on before I had the cooling fan fitted.
Still no idea what not does.

Andy, I have been studying the chassis loom diagrams both pre and post 2014 in an attempt to discover purpose of extra relay. Both diagrams show five relays with the early diagram showing fifth as flasher relay and later one as cooling fan. I'm guessing the flasher relay was incorporated in TSM unit for later models as this has 18 pin connector (two pins unused) against 12 pin one on earlier versions.

This doesn't help with identifying extra relay though so looked closely at cable colours to it. A red/blue (RU) cable can be seen which is unique in providing power to rear fog lamp. Thoughts are that relay may be to inhibit rear fog when headlights not on therefore although not shown on diagrams. Pure speculation of course.

The black box you queried is described as dip/main beam unit although unsure of its need as you already have two standalone relays to handle dip/main and headlamp flash confused2

Hi Bunny/Andy

Isn't the black box the TSM/Lighting Control control unit - the one that Alastair is looking to improve/replace?

I think the relay is the one added that controls the cooling fan.

Regards
Andrew

No this is a different box, the TSM is fitted below the ECU.

Andy, as previously mentioned. The black box you were querying is shown here as (7), dip/main unit E340015 even down to the velcro attachment. Thoughts to its need are as interface between stalk control and the two headlamp relays. Since I believe the TSM unit is involved as well must make the headlamp controls the most complex on this planet confused2
