I noticed yesterday that when I flash my high beam, with the lights off, it doesn’t flash. With the lights on it both flashes and also high beam works as it should.

The car is a 95 plus 8, can anyone suggest where I need to start looking for the fault?

On my 94 +8 I had a slightly different issue, my highbeams wouldn't work with the headlights on but would flash. I ended up having to take the stalk mechanism apart, clean the electrical contacts and bend them to make them a tighter fit that resolved the issue.

Like Bruce, I'd go for the stalk first.

i guess a quick squirt of contact cleaner as step 1 might help.If rarely used they can corrode over.

One thing to be aware of is that the standard steering column stalk switches don't like carrying the higher current that headlamps demand, and in the 80's and 90's MMC didn't see fit to install headlamp relays.

Fortunately it's an easy fix and once done will ensure your dipswitch will carry on working happily.

Here's a document explaining what to do

That's a good idea another project for a rainy day.

That looks very much like the work of the late Lars Tim?

Hamwich, thanks for that and definitely something I will look for, but sadly I know when to throw the towel in and as much as I’d love to do a job like that I think when it comes to snipping wires I know full well that wiring and electrics is way beyond me.
