Hello everyone.
I have a friend in England with a 2005 P4. He thought that he had a dead battery as the car had not moved for nine weeks as he was here. The new battery is fully charged, there is rapid clicking when the ignition key is operated but the engine will not crank over. I have sent him tests to do but thought that you all might have a quick solution. Thanks in advance for replies.

The rapid clicking will be the starter solenoid. It does sound like there's not enough juice in the battery to crank the engine over. Has he tried a jump start?

My next step would be a stuck starter motor?

Have the new battery connections and the leads been checked. If the battery is fully charged, it may be that disturbing the earth lead has introduced a high impedance.

Paul, I\ll get him to check that although I'm sure I mentioned it: TBM, yep tried a jump start. Could well be the starter motor, possibly an alternator problem but he could test for that.

As above, if the battery is sound (able to maintain voltage even under starting load as opposed to just with a meter across it) .... then I'd check power and earth connections, especially as it's been sat.

There should be an earth strap from the engine to the chassis, undo the bolt at the chassis end as it might look ok but when you take off may need cleaning up.
With the jump start, suggest connect the leads in the engine bay rather than to the battery terminals
