I moved to the US 23 years ago and am saddened to see the direction driving in the UK has taken--and we seem to be slowly moving in the same direction here. At present, in Massachusetts speed limits are very low, poorly signposted, change often, and are lightly enforced. Our 4 lane highways have limits of 55 or 65 mph but most traffic cruises at about 80 and some cars go much faster. Entering a neighboring town in open countryside the limit is 30 mph, but entering the built up area it is 40. Go figure. Many towns round here now have a 25 mph limit unless otherwise posted
On a related issue, in the early 1900s Rolls Royce produced a model physically incapable of breaking the 30 mph speed limit, it was called the Legalimit and it didn't sell.

I had a friend that use to butter his Weetabix before he ate them for his breakfast, he had a Morris 8 so a bit different

Back on thread. a speed limiter was not a problem for him.. He's in the Dumfries area now.

Another wonderful example of TM Thread drift, from Speed Limiters to Buttered Weetabix..

The speed limiter thing is horrifying but the buttered digestives, Weetabix and other stuff just blew (what's left of) my (tiny) mind....love it.

As the limit can be over-ridden by the driver just by pressing the accelerator ... and the only downside being an onboard alarm ... it's not much different from the voluntary speed alarm you could set on Mrs Images Audi, other than you can't switch it off... hard to see how they could actually remotely interfere with the driver's ability to accelerate out of trouble without facing massive potential lawsuits for any resulting damage .... now, getting your car to snitch on you to the rozzers via wifi is a distinct possibility.

I unfortunately recognised this Dystopian future about 30 odd years ago..
In the mid 1990's I was in Paris with work, at the invitation of IBM / Dassault Systemes to look at future releases / updates of their CAD / CAM system "CATIA".

At one of the events IBM were displaying their "internet car". A test bed for future technology.
Of the many things they were looking at, many are coming true - I wasn't overly enamoured then, and less so now - very Orwellian / 1984.

The said that the car of the future will:-
Connect you to the "office" - Your emails will be read to you as you drive to work. I've had 2 previous cars (both Mercs) that can do this.
The insidious creep of work into the home life. Some people think its great - I do not.

You'll be able to stream movies to the monitors embedded in the head restraints - been around for years

Real-time on road mass testing of vehicles performance - "Big Data" - Has its uses, as long as its limited to actual vehicle components.

Real-time vehicle tracking - If used correctly has its uses. I know several companies that transport costly components throughout Europe have transponders attached to the vehicles / the packing crates in case of hi-jacking scenarios.
I drove quiet a bit in my working life, from site to site - would not be happy having my bosses tracking my drive minute by minute.

I could see other additional uses that they didn't "sell" but you could see coming....
Haven't got insurance / MOT / Vehicle road tax - prevent the vehicle from starting.
Brake pads to worn / unsafe - prevent the vehicle from starting.

And of course the subject of this thread - automated enforced speed limiting.

All the above are among the reasons I bought my Morgan - to escape the creeping "Big Brother" technology.

All the above "improvements" to make driving safer brought to you by the people who thought "Smart motorways" are a safety improvement - more deaths caused than saved......

Just imagine a stretch of road where there had been say a temporary 50 limit but that was now gone & the limit was 60. If the GPS sin't bang up to date that alarm would become very annoying.
