So, my 1997 +8 3.9 Hotwire can’t breathe! Well, it has that standard air filter canister with a trumpet. Fitting a K&N in that canister doesn’t look like the way forward as there is so little space for the engine to suck air.

Not wanting to butcher my original parts (just so I can put it all back together as original if I should want to) I have managed to get a used air filter canister off eBay (Land Rover part NTC4408). I have cut this down on the engine side which connects to the Air Mass Flow Meter, leaving the original mounting points and most of the airbox has gone, leaving only the lower part going out to the other two mounting points. To finish, I am having a 3 ½ tube welded on to lengthen the intake so a K&N RG-1001 clamp on filter will fit.

When it’s back from the welder, I should have something that fits to the original mountings and which will hold everything in place to allow the K&N to breathe freely. I’ll post some pictures when I get it back from the engineer.

Now here is where I need some help, please. How do I remove the standard air filter canister and fit the newly fabricated one? Obviously, it simply unclips from the Air Mass Flow Meter. After that, looking at the mounting points there are two rubbers sitting on pins (ditto the filter side. Do these just pull out or what is the procedure to remove the air filter box and also, are these rubbers replaceable?

The canister just pushes inboard, off the mounting pins. I just mounted a K&N straight where the canister connects, but did have a small tube to start with.

I can see you need to slide the air filter canister inboard to free it from the horizontal pins on the outside BUT to do that it looks like you need to lift it up on the inboard to first clear the vertical pins? Problem appears to be the canister is a tight fit underneath the central bonnet support. What's the trick to overcome this please?

There should be enough clearance once you push it back off the pins, there was in my case. I wanted to have air flow from outside the engine bay so concocted this set up using an old canister and K&N cone filter, works a treat:

My filter is an old one (15 years) the new filter reference numbers are:

RG-1001WT (Silver)
RG-1001 BL (Blue)
RG-1001RD (Red)

They come with 3 different adapters that allow it to fit to the air flow meter, in my adaptation the filter fits snugly into the open end of the canister.

Did you finish this modification and installation? If so, could you post some photos, please?
