I haven't found anyone who has a 1720mm wide Plus 4 yet. Maybe this is the mysterious 'special order wide body' the dealer is talking about?

One of my friends is working for the German TÜV. When I ordered my MOG (in Britain) I ask him about problems with the COC and the German registration.

With a look at the official paperwork it looks like MORGAN has numbered the maximum sizes. So there is a very big difference between a small body small wheel Plus4 and a big wheel bodied Plus4 (which looks like this is numbered in the COC).

Extracted from the type approval document for Roadster when it was updated for 5 link rear in 2018.This may explain the 1720mm width quoted elsewhere.

It's not uniform, I think the Plus 4 with stainless steel spoke wheels are the widest. As you know, the wings were cut according to the width of the wheels. The standard alloy wheel Plus 4 should be the narrowest. My Plus 4SS with the Minilites was wider than the 2010 Roadster.

Ha ha, I doubt he would be interested. When I last spoke with him he was buying a Triumph Spitfire!

So it looks like the 1720mm is the width of the bumpers! That explains it. The approx 1620mm my friend's measured was to the edge of the wings.

Thanks for that info Richard V6.

I think that is a stylised non technical drawing and you'll find the rear wheel arches are the widest dimension of our cars, the bumpers are well inside the wing dimensions.

Dave W had us all measuring our rear car widths for some reason way back now - my Plus 8 with the BTR axle and 16" x 7" Lightweight Morgan Alloys came out as one of the wider one's I remember.

I think youre right that on our everyday cars the door mirrors are a fixed position and thats where manufacturers take the overall width measurement. But on Morgans the mirrors can be angled so the overall width changes. Also on the 4/4 the outside width difference of the front and rear wings is different than a Plus 4, the rear being the widest point on a 4/4.

Maybe the factory measurement could include the possibility of full width bumpers being fitted, who knows!

I have a 2018 plus 4. The measurement across the rear wheel arches is 164 cm but I'd say the centre nuts of the spoked wheels stick out a fraction more.
Mirrors of course can add to the width depending on how they are positioned.
