So I thought I would post pictures of this project for people like me who are coming to the M3W late and learning that parts are disappearing. With help from others on this forum, I pieced together parts to modify the S&S Part number 170-0176. I apologize to everyone for redundancy of this post. It's an old issue for most, but people new to mog ownership might appreciate the info.

Here is a pic of the backplate of the original Stealth filter made for the x-wedge

and here is a pic of the Universal backplate, which fits the throttle body of the x-wedge. It is virtually identical except for no holes for mounting braces. So it needs countersunk holes for braces (which will fit right under the rubber edge of filter itself

For the mounting arms I used the stainless steel arm that came with the kit. One of these works well. I order an extra one (S&S part 16-0471)

The universal stealth kit does not have the same room on the outer edge for bolts. In the X-Wedge Stealth they bolt in from behind in a threaded hole.. I decided to use size 10-32 flat head bolts and counter sink the hole. The bolt goes through the front of the backplate flush, and sits directly under the filter which god willing creek don't rise will hold it in place if it wiggles free. I secure it with blue loctite, washer and nylock (and a prayer). At the engine end of mounting arm, I used a 1/4 inch spacer.

I may swap out the quarter inch spacer with 3/16. But in terms of how sturdy it is, as my dad would say "it isn't going anywhere." I may swap out the 5/16 hex bolts on the engine with button heads for more grip and and to be matchy matchy with stainless looks

So I cannot wait to test it (as soon as the snow melts)

Craig - one problem to watch out for, that I hit with the X-wedge stealth kit, is to make sure that the mounting arms screwed to the cylinder heads are not causing the filter plate to pull on the throttle body. On my M3W they were, and the bottom bolt that holds the throttle to the intake manifold sheared off. My post on this incident is here. A few posts further down is a photo showing the arm with an offset added.

One of the arms in the kit should have had an offset in it, to account for the offset of the cylinders themselves, but did not. I don't see any offset in your arms, but maybe you already did this with spacers?

This got me intrigued so I took my stock filer cover off and had a first look. Unless I’m missing something I can’t see a reason for the support ears for a light filter assembly like you have there, the stock backplate looks like a hearty casting so I can see why they exist on that one,. If it doesn’t need them then it looks like a straight swap

Okay, this is good advice, Is the idea that the the engine vibration creates shear stress on those bolts? I think my mounting arms may be putting pressure on it all right. I think I need to order slightly smaller spacers. I think I have I have quarter inch in there now. (I could just use 3/16 of washers as spacers I suppose)

So, offset. I was thinking of that. But I noticed it's an illusion--this off set (at least on my 2012)--from the notch that is cut out from one bolt hole and not the other. That is, I think S&S already compensates for the backset of one cylinder by etching out the space where the driver side bolt goes? What I did was measure the distance on the original backplate.

Both read 3/8 to me? relative to where plate touches engine and where mount touches engine bolt hole. First passenger side

Driver side:

From the post you linked, John, I would like to know the distance between yellow lines on the backplate of this original x-wedge stealth kit. Is this the same as the driver side? this is the size of the spacer I need.
