Rich, I was trying to duplicate the support arms on the original stealth kit. Your original air filter should have support bolted to the engine, no?

Yes it does and can see a reason why it is there on the stock cast aluminium backplate but can’t see any reason really why they are needed on the stealth kit as looks lighter and look to be held by 3 cap head screws to the throttle body
Perhaps it need more but seems overkill to me

Okay, I brought down the spacers to 3/16 using washers. I think this will put pressure toward the engine and hopefully keep the backplate from pulling off throttle

It is the same on both sides, and is about a quarter of an inch, as best as I can measure it in place.

And I do agree, now that I go back and look at it, that S&S does seem to have already accounted for the cylinder offset in how the bolt holes are placed. I think my failure occurred from the filter mount pulling the throttle forward so that one bolt sheared where the throttle body meets the intake manifold.

If you are looking out for this issue, you can tell by holding the filter holder plus arms (and spacers in your case) in place before you bolt it all together if there is any push or pull on the throttle. I would think ideally there is none, and the filter holder and the arms both sit flush with no pressure. I got there by bending an offset into one arm, but spacers should work just as well.

Thanks for the heads up, man! I will keep an eye on it. I thought my main concern was those countersunk bolts coming free and getting sucked into the engine. Now it's how much stress the arms may be putting on the throttle body. I used blue loctite on the bolts to the support arms and they are as tight as I can go without stripping hex head. Instructions tell you to use blue loctite on the bolts into the throttle body too (which I did with some hesitance because it makes for a hard time next go). But I figure I will get a few thousand miles out of this before I have to disassemble. knock on wood. As for engine vibration, all these parts bolted together should be shaking in the same direction while engine is running. So nothing is pulling or pushing against itself (in theory)

Rich I think the support arms are there to help secure the extra weight of the filter covers that guys buy for these. The original filter cover was made out of a relative light-weight metal. And S&S offered lots of options to spruce up your kit. Again, all this is old news for long-time owners. But maybe new owners might benefit from the info

Regarding the need for the arms, there have been discussions before in this forum about the weight of an unsupported filter vibrating and damaging the air intake hardware. The post I linked to is in the context of the apparently heavier Kuryakyn filter, but it seems a valid concern.

Sadly, since that was written Emil has announced his retirement from Morgan Custom Designs so the Air Cleaner Support Kit for Kuryakyn may no longer be available.

Does the G56 air cleaner system use the same supporting arms?
