Can anyone share thoughts about why there is a metal pipe on top of the engine (intake side) carrying the engine coolant from one silicone hose to another?
IMHO it just delivers more heat to the engine bay... wouldn't a single silicone hose from the radiator to the engine suffice?

Maybe because a single long flexible hose would be too floppy.

Long flexible coolant pipes can collapse as the engine cools down, this is why racing cars traditionally have aluminium pipes joined by short flexible pipes.
I have just changed the long rubber bottom hose on our 4/4 TC with two silicon hoses joined with an aluminium pipe.

IMHO it just delivers more heat to the engine bay... But…. If the heat from the pipe was prevented from escaping into the engine bay then would that heat energy not be dumped to the rad instead, only to be transferred by the air flow back into the engine bay

True - but I wouldn't burn my fingers when accidentally touching it  Talking of a rad, that reminds me I need "a bigger boat" there...

I didn’t like the wiring clamped up along side the pipe because of the heat so spaced it so it had some clearance. MMC had cable tied it to it!
