Been driving two years on my illegal plates. I haven’t been pulled over yet despite passing plenty of policeman. Of course there is always a first time but my feeling is that it’s fairly low risk unless you are pulled over for something else ( speeding perhaps) and a nosey policeman starts asking questions.

Having been rear ended whilst stationary in poor weather in a previous Mog, with the usual "didn't see ya mate" I really want maximum visibility from reflective plates

Plus helpful ANPR like the Chunnel assumes modern plates
Why give overworked plod the hassle of pulling you ?
Should you declare to your insurer you run non compliant plates ? would they be happy ?
God forbid you are involved in an RTA fatality and the accident investigators pull out the fine toothed comb, I've seen 'em check the filaments of brake lights post accident

I've read this several times on this forum over the years. so I've always 'tested' this opinion when driving at night, in fog. mist, snow, torrential rain.or a combination of them etc.

In every instance I been able to view the rear lights many hundred metres before I've been able to pick up any sign of the number plate. Even the rear red reflectors make themselves obvious before I get a hint of reflection from a numberplate. I am quite happy that my (legal) black and white plates have zero mpact on the rear visibility of my Mog.

I do however stick my LED sidelights on when visibilty gets poor, I have a pair of high level additional LED brake lights, and a pair of LED fog lights (which I use actively - turn them off if I have a car a normal driving distance behind me, and then turn back on if there is no-one)

Isn't it the case that number plates are not designed to make the car visible and serve no useful purpose in this respect. Number plates need to be high visibility for ID purposes only.

I think so - that's why you legally have to have a rear number plate lamp to light it up at night.
