Curious if anyone's done an automatic transmission swap on a 60's-era +4? Looking to blow the dust off one of our two +4 projects (the '61), and a combination of factors have made the idea of converting it to an automatic a tempting thing to consider.
The car as-is doesn't have an engine or transmission, would likely source the engine from a TR3 block we have sitting around, or possibly the engine from the '66 as that vehicle's got other drivetrain plans. Goal would be a setup that would allow it to keep up with modern freeway speeds.

The size of the bellhousing required for a torque converter might be an issue that requires transmission tunnel mods that impacts footwell and pedal space. There are a couple of 5-speed options that have a history of success. I have one in my '67 +4 that makes freeway speeds much more comfortable. I don't think the tunnel had to be modified at all. One of those conversions might save you some expensive lessons about unintended consequences.

Standard Vanguard had auto transmission an an option, same block as a TR / +4 but rare as hen's teeth I would imagine.

Flaagan, Morgan Spares has a conversion kit that uses the Ford T-9 box. That's what's in my car. Reportedly, it's the conversion that requires the least amount of modification. There is a direct link to the install guide on their website, but it appears to be broken. I was able to find the link here. I suggest you give Morgan Spares a call to discuss. I don't know the current situation with availability and pricing, but I'm sure they will let you know.
