I think responsibility for insuring your car falls squarely on your shoulders and highly unlikely to “get away” with it because you did not receive a reminder from the insurance company.
Your post does not make it clear, but however, IF you have accepted their quote for renewal and paid for it, and they simply haven’t arranged your insurance, then it may be a different matter all together.

Assuming you have your cover note from Headley, email a copy to the DVLA as proof of cover.

I was told by Headley it is an ERS responsibility to update the database when I discovered mine had not been registered a week after I had paid for cover, it was fixed overnight.

Wilson you have made my day ! I was re-reading earlier posts on this thread. A Swiss friend of mine who now lives in Panama loves that expression, how I wish that TV weather forecasters would use it instead of "changeable with strong winds and rain" or somesuch.

Couldn’t agree more. I am also a very satisfied G&W customer and member of the written off 3.7 contingent.

Usual "we rip you off on renewals unless you pay attention" renewal cobblers. Same as your mobile phone carrier will do if not challenged.

Pick a number 5% below last years.
Call them and say you have had a counter offer at that price from XXXX.
They will match it.
Most of the systems have a 5% easy decision button.

I recently received the renewal quote for our two tin tops. Although our 17 year old granddaughter is included on my wife's car, the premiums for both cars are less than last years by nearly 14%.

First are you sure the fine is genuine and came from DVLA Secondly your insurance company cannot auto renew without your permission, did you receive this request and did you reply ? If not you are likely not insured. If you did it is possible your reg number was incorrectly entered on the database, check this with Headley. This is quite common. If it was incorrectly entered then inform the DVLA sending a copy of your ins cert. You should ALWAYS check ASK MID database on the first day of renewal. Or check the details on the email confirmation of renewal. It is worth remembering that if for any reason (by accidenr or design) the penalty is £300 plus 6 points and vehicle seized, £150 recovery fee.

I'm pleased to say this is now sorted courtesy of a chap called Dan who works for Finch. Apparently the problem was finger trouble and my reg was entered wrongly and hence did not appear on the database.

Also, he explained that the troubles we have been having are related to Hiscox deciding it no longer wanted the Morgan business and only gave Headley/Finch three weeks to get it transferred. Given the extras over and above normal insurance - agreed value, retained salvage etc. etc. this takes months to get and underwriter to agree to hence the challenges we've faced.

Finch do want to keep the business and we can expect things to improve. Wait and see I guess is the approach.
