I've received a letter from Porsche UK informing me that if, in the next 4 years, changes in Construction and Use Regulations are retrospectively applied so that Euro 6 petrol engined cars are no longer allowed to be freely used on the public roads then Porsche will buy back the car at up to 70% if the price paid.
I cannot envisage such a situation, in my view it would bring down the Government, so what are Porsche doing this for??
Can we imagine MMC doing this??

I wonder what their definition of 'freely' is?
Would just being added to the naughty list of localised city ULEZ zones trigger a buyback ?
Strange old world eh !?

Oh, PORSCHE has some expierence with such things. In cause the „Abgasskandal“ there where a lot of brandnew Cheyennes in the USA, which couldn‘t be sold by law. So back to Germany, hire a bigger building and switch them over to European spec. Than sell them for a bargain to „third class windy used cardealers“ a little bit more in the east. Some of this „European Americans“ come back to Germany also for a bargain. Some Customer wonder at the first service the official Dealers aren‘t happy about their new customers. https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/cayenne-auf-umwegen-a-ac8a3b27-0002-0001-0000-000152926062Greets René

I suspect Porsche are no stranger to controversy given the engine issues they experienced in the design of their then new to market water-cooled engine that could allegedly destroy it`s self at car park speeds having on occasion covered few miles in total. The cynic in me thinks as this might affect as many as 3% of production, and that there were rumours of a class action in the US, perhaps spawned the Porsche extended warranty insurance scheme for Porsches up to 15 years old and something like a max of 150K miles which customers could buy into..... I sure did, despite that the widely reported issue was resolved at least one model year before my 991, not that it is totally free of issues that can bug me..but then I am a grumpy old man..

Peter I was speaking to someone in the know and who works in the car industrial , selling plus £80,000 cars, and he told that the way ahead for a lot of car manufacturers will be in the very near future to buy back vehicles and modernise them and sell them back to the public. It's all about reducing the amount of energy it takes in make a new car car from scratch.

Pretty blatant 'greenwashing' by Porsche. 4 years is far too short a time horizon, Euro6 cars will inevitably get banned in low emission zones, but it wouldn't be until the government after next so Porsche are in very little danger of having to honour this pledge - and eve if they do, as Nick says, the "up to" clause is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Of course manufacturers should be taking cars in and upgrading them to reduce emissions and improve efficiency, they've been capable of doing it for decades but have never bothered because it's more profitable to design in obsolescence and sell new stuff.

EURO 7 is not yet agreed by the European Parliament and in the aftermath of the energy crisis it may well be kicked down the road. EURO 6 is the default standard and for ICE Cars EURO 7 emissions are unchanged. What EURO 7 does is to put new limits on brake dust and tyre dust. This will encourage PHEVs with regenerative braking, which is no bad thing.
If low emission zones jump to EURO 7 all they will do, in my view, is punish those least able to afford it without achieving much!!

It'll be 2030 before we see the next big change as more and more people in urban areas give up private motoring. The biggest resistance to the idea is Boomers (and to a lesser extent, GenX ) and they are rapidly dying off. The majority voting blocks at the next election will be Millenials, followed by Genz's at the following elections, and they think very differently from our generation, especially in regard to environmental issues. There's an interesting article in the FT about how the old assumption that people inevitably get more right-wing as they get older is no longer valid: https://www.ft.com/content/c361e372-769e-45cd-a063-f5c0a7767cf4

It may sound easy to update cars with better technical and more efficient solutions.... Homologation is gone, if you do so. To male this a solution worth heading for, there should be an extra lone for mass updates. Otherwise the new homologation process does not make sense...
