Does anyone know what the actual factory specification is for coolant for a 2005 Plus 4? Unbelievably it's not in the handbook and I'm not sure if it is an HOAT type or not.

What colour is the coolant currently in the engine?

A Mk3 Mondeo that runs the 1.8 and 2.0 litre Duratec engine should use O.A.T antifreeze (organic acid technology) which is usually a fluorescent pinky/orange colour.

I'd assume Morgan would use the correct Ford Super Plus Premium WSS-M97B44-D which is orange in colour, if they did then something from any manufacturer that confirms to WSS-M97B44-D spec will be fine, it doesnt need to be the Ford/Motorcraft brand.

Confusingly some companies like Comma dye their WSS-M97B44-D red rather than orange, so don't go by colour, always make sure it shows WSS-M97B44-D in the spec on the back of the container.

In my 2011 +4, 2 litre Duratec, I have used Motorcraft Superplus WSS-M97B44-D which conforms to the spec in my handbook. It is orange in colour and have mixed it 50/50.

The thing is, mine is a purple/blue colour and was last changed in mid 2021 before I bought the car from Borghi Morgan in Milan. All servicing was done by them (I have enquired with them and hope to get a positive answer).

Check out this thread Topline. The Mannol coolant I linked to and have been using does conform to WSS-M97B44-D as well as very many others.

BTW I can recommend this inexpensive coolant refractometer for measuring the freezing point of your coolant in situ. It can also measure SG of battery electrolyte to give accurate indication of your batterys SOC.

Thanks for that. I had a look at refractometers and test kits etc but none of them can tell me what type of antifreeze I have, just the concentration levels.

Nevertheless I used my identical refractometer to measure the unknown OE coolant in my car and the fresh Mannol, and both indicated exactly -40°C freezing point (can't remember which scale I used). For that reason I didn't dilute the Mannol which was the recommendation anyway. Anyone diluting the same 50/50 would be well advised to check the freezing point afterwards unless using concentrated coolant with specific dilution and performance recommendations.

BTW this device showed that my Land Rover coolant had dropped to just -10°C protection due to frequent topping up with water needing me to add undiluted fresh coolant to increase protection.

I've heard back from Borghi Morgan (Romeo Ferraris) in Milan and the red Mannol AF12+ is definitely the one to go for. Thanks for the help.

I would drain it all down and replace it with water less coolant from Evans. You have to use a Prep fluid first, this I believe can be used again on other engines. But once you use the Evans, it last the life time of the engine. It might be idea to repace the pipework if required. I have no connection with the company, just very happy with it.
