Morning all, would Mulfab be as good as anywhere to look at getting an aluminium radiator for our 2004 plus 8 (in the uk)?

And from anyone that’s done the replacement, is a larger fan also necessary also, or is the original adequate?
It’s just for normal (slightly heavy right foot) UK/European road use.

If the larger fan is recommended then what about the wiring/switchgear for it, can the wiring take the extra current that the larger fan will draw?
Thanks in advance

Think mulfab is about the only choice now that Si fab has given up. I fitted one of his and the original fan bolted directly on, minus the old cowling, which is not needed. Cooling is more than adequate; the temperature gauge runs slightly lower than previously. On odd occasions when stuck in traffic, the fan has come on for a short while and dealt with the excess temperature in no time.
If doing the job yourself, note that it is easier to remove the fan unit from the rad whilst in the car, and pulling them down separately.
Edit: Just noticed you have a plus 8, which I know run a lot hotter, so maybe await advice from a plus 8 owner to confirm about fan. I know that some people have installed a fan thermostat over-ride switch so that they can leave the fan running continuously in harsh conditions.

A lot of the US Morgan owners buy the Alloy Rads made in China below is the link.

They have given very good reports on quality / fit etc and I expect some owners might of helped with sizing etc.

John my 1999 Plus 8 came to me nine years ago now fitted with the excellent Mulfab and higher powered fan, looking at the loom I would say it was a straight plug in job.

The fan only runs in idling traffic on hot Devon summer days.

Had Ali rad on my 1980 3.9 +8 for many years. As said above I would fit an over-ride switch as well. Useful to use to pre-empt needing the fan.

I’ve had a Mulfab rad for about 10 years now, it has the standard fan and is fine. I do run with bonnet extensions from Paul Webb on here, and have wired in a fan override switch, but only as we regularly have days of plus 30 degrees here.

My Plus8 (2002) had a replacement MMC rad fitted by a previous owner. It doesn’t overheat but the fan cuts in quite often in summer. It is a bit underspecified to cope with the heat generation and less than optimum airflow. Not a problem but hearing the fan so often can be tedious. I have rear bonnet extenders fitted in summer and am trying ducting extra air to the lower area of the rad as it is shielded a bit by the number plate mounting method. I carry extra fuses for the circuit in case one blows as the fan is needed in summer on long runs in traffic. Next job is fitting a manual switch to put the fan on.
In winter the gauge runs at 80degC but in summer it increases to 90degC hence the fan cutting in more often at slower speeds. Trigger temp is about 98degC.

Thanks everybody, I'm 99% sure that Mulfab will be getting an order in the coming days, I'm just not sure if the upgraded fan is necessary or not, they've recommended the 14" heavy duty one at £160 and a wiring kit at £40, both plus vat, so it adds a chunk on.

Any opinions for or against from anyone with a plus 8 with the aluminium radiator?

John, knowing how infrequently my heavy duty fan kicks in I would think the standard fit with the efficiency of the Mulfab will suit your needs tbh.

I changed to a Mulfab or Sifab cant remember and left the standard big fan on, later 95 ish on Plus 8 have a decent Spal fan from memory so you should not need to change, my fan runs at the lights and when i come home into the garage -but at any speed over 50kph the car runs cooler -even with some track work, i did change to an early opening thermostat to catch the heat rise before it became uncatchable . Thought the fan was on too often till I went to Mog 18 and every Plus 8 coming in to the car park had a fan running , so relaxed about it now, at speed I am probably running too cool for the cats -but they are soon to be removed anyway - (not required here).
