Ok gurus, I had my timing belt snap on the weekend and after a little more exploration I am wondering if my oil pump hasn't seized.
How difficult is the oil pump to turn by hand? I am looking at the shaft at the bottom of the cam chest under the tensioner and right next to the broken end of the belt in this picture. I am completely unable to turn it by hand - I am assuming this should rotate quite freely.
Any thoughts?

No, the shaft at the bottom is the oil pump drive.

As RichJames says, the lower drive is the crankshaft pinion, that does also drive the oil pump. It will be pretty stiff to turn naturally. It should move and you will need to align all the dowel holes and indicator marks to fit a new cam belt. The correct route for the cam belt around the pinions and idlers is embossed on the inside of the cover.

Ah, I found a better drawing and indeed, it is the crankshaft pinion. Always happy to be wrong when it means less work. Thanks to you both. I guess I should have been worried if it did spin freely lol!

I was checking that the rollers were not seized so that when the new belt goes on I dont instantaneously snap the new one! It appears that the belt does not drive the pump but that the pinion drives the pump and the belt...my experience is with gas turbines, all gears, no belts!

Would have been annoying if the best lubricated part of the engine had seized.
