I have a 1932 morgan three wheeler in Japan.
What is the tightening torque value for the tyre bolts?
Tell me about it.

Best regards.

Torque values were not published in 1932 and for many years afterwards. Tighten them but not so much you cannot undo them later.

Depends what wheels you have.

For a 1932 R type you should have late 2 speeder wheels.

4 stud Dunlop Magna wheels came in for the 1933 model year. They don't need an awful lot of torque

Also check them very carefully for cracking between the stud holes and any signs of the wheel pulling over the wheel nut

Dear RichardV6,
Dear Arwyn Williams

Thank you very much for your answer.

The tightening torque for the tyres was set to 40 Nm, based on your opinion.

About torque: modern cars the wheels must been fixed with 110/120NM (Volkswagen) or the new Mini up to 140NM.

The classic old Mini and Triumph Vitesse the wheels are only fittes with 65NM!

So I think you are more in the lower range. Or as „MWS“ (manufacturer of the new wirewheels) says: don‘t tight them overethusiaric.

Less is more when it comes to Morgan wheel studs. On my 72, although the wheel studs are an M14m they screw into the hub with little more than an M8 fitting (or Imp equivalent) so are very easy to snap.

The other thing to realise is vintage three wheeler hubs are awfully brittle, especially more so as they get older.

I thought a normal car would have around 100Nm, but when I measured the torque on one wheel of the M3W, it was 40Nm.

It's difficult, isn't it?

I don't use a torque wrench. I do them up by 'feel' (although did once go too far and snapped a stud). I check them regularly to make sure they are still tight (and they usually are).

Dear TBM

It's important to have a feel for it.
I'm new to pre-war cars, so I would have liked to know the tightening torque, if it was available.
