MacBook Pro. This is the file name as it appears on the computer: IMG_6028crop.jpg, and when I drop it onto the TM Image site, it shows up as in my post above. That image is 1465 x 1080 unfortunately, so will need to be downsized to be used as an avatar (the max is 100 x 100). You can do this using a free ap like Image Size, which is free.

I have downloaded it saved it to gif (it was a jpeg which is what caused it to bork) uploaded it again to the tm-img site If you can go into your profile and get to the avatar image settings. select the second option and put in this code https://www.tm-img.com/images/2023/12/17/IMG_6028.gifgo to the bottom of the page and hit save! It has worked for my avatar as a test, hopefully you can see this? I will flip mine back shortly so we don't get confused......

Simon, the Christmas avatar .jpg file I'm using at present is 1586 x 1600 px. The previous one I used for several years was 3000 x 2250, both confirmed after saving the avatar itself. Am I breaking forum rules I ask because clearly the forum software accepts these unedited sizes giving rise to my comments above.

I do have a smaller version saved on TM Image, but was getting the same result, so I tried what Richard suggested.

I doubt the TM Image site is converting to .jpeg - it doesn't convert any of my .jpg files to .jpeg.. At the the risk of adding to the confusion here, TM-Img is now storing files as .jpeg rather than .jpg . I noticed it the other day when I uploaded some images and I have just tested it again with two random pictures (one of my trip to Salisbury last week and an example of my recent attempt at cooking.) These both have .jpg extensions on my Windows 11 laptop but TM-img has changed them to .jpeg. I know this didn't use to happen, something must have changed at the TM-Img end. However, I don't believe it matters. The .jpeg problem is a bug in this site's gallery forums, but only there. Pictures hosted elsewhere are just image files and are rendered properly by HTML. As for avatar the size, I wasn't aware that larger images were accepted. Nonetheless I would recommend you resize to 100x100. Downloading a file that is 1000 times larger than needed is a waste of bandwidth, at the server end as well as each viewer.

My understanding is that if you want to upload your image to the TM main site then it does need to be of the right size (100x100) and extension. TM does allow you to use a link to an external site where it can also be larger than 100x100 and TM then renders it into the correct display size for your avatar.
This is what I have done for mine in the past.
Saved to TM-IMG in full size as a suitable format (jpg, gif etc) but larger size still. Got the full link from TM-IMG as outlined above. Put it into the TM avatar using the link option.
This seems to allow good quality images to render and I hope it does not slow down the pages rendering etc.
p.s. Nice Toad in the hole - gonna need a good onion gravy.

Unfortunately it does matter Ian, hence why this thread was started by 1854sailor as his .jpeg file was not accepted as a valid avatar link - the valid examples include only .jpg. I tried a .jpeg extension image myself and received the same Improper.... message. Regarding file size I agree in essence excepting that 100 x 100 px or less can give a fuzzy avatar. I also like to zoom in to avatars to see the car or maybe another aspect of same. Maybe Simon could offer us a self imposed limit, but well above 100 x 100. BTW I have no issues using Imgur as my free picture hosting site.

Unfortunately, the avatar sizing and rules are in-build into the software, so I cannot amend them. As you've mentioned, the jpeg vs jpg does matter, as does the sizing. The system rejects larger format sizes to ensure the site skin / spacing works correctly. As I mentioned above, if you are on ios devices, I would recommend Image Size as a great free app. Furthermore, as RichardV6 states, Imgur is a super free host for simple things like avatar as it does not alter the file type.

Richard: Well I did say I might confuse matters! I hadn't checked how the avatar setting worked, I thought it just stored the url. You are correct, the forum software checks the picture and therefore suffers the same .jpg / .jpeg bug of the galleries. All the while TM-img changes jpeg file extensions it can't be used to host avatars in that case. Alistair: Yes I do onion gravy too! ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2023/12/18/onion-gravy.th.jpeg)
