When I was referring to quality parts, I meant in the sense that they are not always subject to the lowest quote selection criteria, but represent best value (taking whole life costs and frequency of failure) and avoiding potential lower specification standards ( often blamed on the accountants) when in practise its often also poor/lazy engineering.

A good example of poor specification engineering standards and potentially lax parts quality control is the Mercedes SLK rear subframes that are having to be replaced under the 30 year corrosion warranty, as the subframes are rusting from the inside out, due to inadequate treatment of the metal cavity inside the subframe. A change in engineering and quality standards came about during the period of the Chrysler and Benz tie up, which is impacting Mercedes cars of that period.

Having worked in the airline industry, and know the paper trail that follows parts and the engineering records maintained for all components ,from flying hours to number of rotations etc I do find it amazing that rogue parts can enter the system, but sourcing used parts and using spares stockists to keep costs down can leave the backdoor open to abuse.

I would take some convincing that cost reduction did not take even more precedence over engineering quality in the UK if not most of the West for quite a few decades... It ever seemed to me that once computerisation entered the scene and that risks could be more closely matched to reality, risk management took priority to the extent that risks were on some occasions pushed to the limit and beyond in some instances...I suspect bean counters will have played their part in such processes too..?

Having earned my coin with a few decades in the airport environment and hobby time restoring rebuilding and repairing my old sports cars, I have come across a few suspect parts and design failures, never more so when buying into the idea of "quality." I suspect our brand expectations and beliefs may require a bit of a re-boot..? Mrs Luddite was not best pleased with her SLK`s failings, the new Evoque that followed it did well for six years, all be it with under 30k miles in that time, though once it`s electronics started playing up with prospect of a 7 week wait before the LR dealership might be able to look at it..enough was enough..

Rusting from the inside out was ever the way corrosion worked in vehicle box sections.... Fortunately my old Mog`s chassis has few of them...(-:

Hi Dave,
I have a Plus Six, when you say it transforms the car, in what way, my car sticks to road like the proverbial s**t to a blanket, the ride is firm but no where near as harsh as my previous Roadster. The tail end does however drop under acceleration. I am considering an up grade just wondering what the benefits are.
many thanks
Andy

Hi Andy, At first I thought the factory set up was fine, but given some time using the car we thought the factory suspension on our Plus Six felt that the rear did not work well with the front when cornering, over bumps and hard road camber changes. Although the suspension worked it did not feel that right.

The SSL kit replaces front and back coil overs using their own designed spring rates and Spax adjustable shocks, in addition, the front roll bar has a different drop link fitted that changes how the front roll bar interacts with the suspension.
The overall result feels like the front is more planted without the hard jolts, the rear feels slightly harder sprung. The rear now seems to work with the front when cornering and overall it feels much more planted and smooth.

We also try to use our car for touring and have had no grounding issues fully loaded with luggage, passenger and driver since the SSL kit was fitted. It copes well with the extra luggage weight on the rear.

I would drop Peter Ballard an email at design@suspensionsupplies.co.uk I am sure he would discuss with you the spec and setup of the SSL kit for the Plus Six. I sent SSL several emails before we decided to go with their kit.

If you do a search on this forum there are a couple of threads ref the SSL upgrade.

Hope this helps.
Dave

From my experience the original set up was a little agricultural and traditional in feel, if you like to drive slow in fast out on good tarmac it's fine, also the rear would sag with two up and loaded with luggage on a weekend trip. The SSL set up feels very different with near neutral handling in the bends on dry roads and does not sag when fully loaded, the ride quality is also superior as the jolts over poor surfaces are smoothed out.
I have my shocks on mid setting and have not felt the need to adjust them.
I fitted mine in around 5 hours just taking my time and had no problems.

Good to see owners using their CX cars and after driving all MY of CX the MY23 is a world apart compared to the 1st gen, although as some have noted not with out its problems. Williams will be offering upgrades soon to further enhance the 23 and bring the 21/22 cars up a notch.
