About to replace my fuel filter with a MAHLE unit as part of my service. Looking at the existing set up I am not familiar with the the type of pipe to filter connectors, are these some sort of push on connector and is a special release tool required?

No special tool is required, there is rectangular button to press use fingers or flat bladed screw driver to depress and pull hose off whilst depressed, to refit just push on and they will lock in place.

Is the fuel system under any sort of pressure or is it just do a you say.

With fuel injection systems, run the engine and remove the fuel pump fuse whilst it is running.When the engine dies to a stop, pressure will have been released.

On the M3W the residual pressure is minimal, I have changed many fuel pumps and filters without worrying about the pressure

Many thanks for advice now to change the filter.

Immediately after shutdown, there will be about 58psi of pressure. After sitting for a few hours, residual pressure should be zero.

Forgot to mention that you can also depressurize using the schrader valve on the one fuel injector bracket (engine not running of course!). Hold a rag around a small screwdriver or similar and press the valve down. Gives more control over containing fuel spray than opening a fuel line elsewhere.

When you fit the new fuel filter it's well worth isolating it from its bracket with some insulating tape or similar to prevent Galvanic corrosion. More details in THIS THREAD.
