Dear friends

When i press clutch i first have to pump it up to be able to shift gears, when i drive slowly less problems. I fill up the cylinder to control pressue.

Car was not driven regularly

What does this mean?

Thank you menm

Firstly, bleed the hydraulics to remove any air, and renew all the hydraulic fluid, to remove any possible water.

If you still have problems then there is a possibility of seal failing in either master or slave cylinder.

If you need to fill the (master?) cylinder then it sounds like you have a leak. Check all four corners and the master cylinder. If one is leaking then probably best to change all the seals as the others are likely to go as well.

Menm,

I had exactly the same problem with my 1993 +8. In my case it was due to the seal in the slave cylinder wearing out. It is very difficult to access the cylinder to bleed it, so although the brake fluid had been changed regularly, I don't think the clutch fluid ever had. Thus over the years dirt (corrosion?) accumulated in the cylinder and had never been flushed out, and eventually wore the seal out.

Changing it is a nasty job. I decided it would be easiest to do it by taking the gearbox cover off, but to do that you need to take the propshaft tunnel off first. So the seats and carpets had to come out too.

You might be able to get at the cylinder from the engine compartment, but I thought you would need X-ray eyes and quadruple-jointed hands and fingers so I didn't even try.

I refurbished mine - and the master cylinder while I was at it - with kits from Rutters.

What I didn't do but with hindsight perhaps should have done, is either to pipe up the bleed nipple to somewhere accessible, and/or to modify the gearbox cover to make access easier.

Hope this doesn't put you off!
