If the noise is from the pillar a little silicone grease may help. This certainly aids removal.

There are wear scratches on the column - I’m trying tape around it

I would be very wary of applying tape to it. The pillars are necessarily a close fit and the tape will probably wrinkle off and could become entangled inside the seat . It could then jam things up altogether. Scratches on the pillars are common. Lubrication is the best approach; even a short squirt of wd40 down the hole may help the squeak.

+1, or

Alternatively, you could use a small amount of leather cream, on the column.

Too late.

How would it jam things altogether?

The tape rolls up against the location point and then it jams, usually when trying to remove it and it wont come back out!

I used to put car wax on the stems of mine to make them slide easier. No punch in the face or a flying headrest then !

Vaseline! Works on babies bums and it works here too! Applied sparingly it won't contaminate the leather of the seat and most importantly it won't dry out. Apply it to the bottom half of the stem only and you will find that this will sort things out. Don't ever start squirting things like WD40 down the hole as it will soak into the seat back leather and leave a stain!
