Can I give a shameless plug to my new favourite tool https://amzn.eu/d/hopQWZOWifey bought me one of these a couple of months ago, initially unimpressed as it feels a bit cheap and toylike. My does it do a good job, must have used it 10 or 12 times on the same charge and the first disc. It’s cut bolts, stainless sheet, mild steel sheet, piano wire and most recently I managed to get it into and really tight spot to grind off a seized and rounded nut on the drip link of our golf. Cracking little thing, highly recommended (hope the link works)

If it does the job, great…but maybe they are being a bit generous with the power output of 550 watts for a battery powered machine. That is equivalent to 30 amps at 18 volts. Expect the Chinese thought that would impress us no end!

Expect the Chinese thought that would impress us no end! I can believe it... that would only be a 3000mAh battery running at 10C (ie 10x3 amps). Here is a battery claiming to do 250-500 amps! (likely only for a few seconds mind you!)

My 18v dewalt drill is rated at 460w so maybe the rating isn’t that fanciful. From memory there are many creative ways of rating power, I remember Amstrad used to rate their Hifi as peak-peak giving ludicrously high numbers despite the industry standard being RMS (blimey that’s got a few cogs ticking in my brain)
Nevertheless no matter what the real power is the tool does a much better job than I ever anticipated and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend one to a friend or on here.

From experience working in the industrial power tool industry, the vast majority of battery and mains powered tools are made in China now. Even Hilti have outsourced some of their smaller products over the years and are not all made in Liechtenstein. The advancement in battery tool technology is amazing now, and even cheap range products are very good for the home workshop.

Grumpy 2 if my memory is correct RMS = .707 of the peak value... ie 100watts peak = 70.7 watts RMS

David Byrne Yep my cogs have been turning too, root of 2 = 1.414, reciprocal 0.707, hence RMS. I always admired Alan Sugars use of peak-peak marketing ; take the standard RMS, multiply it by 1.414 to get a peak value then double it to get peak to peak! Big numbers were impressive in the 70s Finally exhausted my first battery yesterday. Cutting 2mm sheet to make 6 hinge brackets. I remain very impressed with my super tool!

Little experience with rechargeable tools but googling about…you guys are right…500+ watts is indeed attainable from a 18 v battery. I stand corrected.

The majority yes, except Makita have a manufacturing factory in Telford, if you check an up to date Makita product guide you’ll see a Union Jack adjacent to the Model number of the British made tools, they also built their newest state of the art manufacturing plant in Romania. Not wanting to dampen the enthusiasm, I know it’s futile, but I refuse to buy anything from Amazon, the world was a better place without the cheapskate leeching business, any money spent with tax dodging Bazos helps only him.
