The modern equivalent .... 2x Hyabusa top ends on a custom block ..... not as pretty as the '40s version but at around 500bhp and weighing 100kg it's the sort of motor that pushes modern hillclimb single-seaters to the times they get!

Benelli .... V8 250cc !! 😮 ..... built in 1968 .... never raced because the FIM then restricted 250s to twin-cylinder .... imagine how gutting it must have been to hear that news after building this little jewel!

In keeping with the D-Day anniversary, here is an archive photo of the valve-timing gears from the Bristol Hercules radial engine. This was a 14-cylinder two-row radial sleeve aero engine produced by the Bristol Engine Company starting in 1939. It powered the Bristol Beaufighter heavy fighter, and was commonly used on British bombers at the time.

This engine was designed on drawing boards, using manual drawing instruments and 2D orthogonal projections. No 3D solids, no CAD simulations to check for geometric interference.

Respect..

Also no CNC machines to mark up and cut the gearwheels either, just proper hands on machinists, perhaps assisted with a slide rule and a sharp 4H pencil

Those were the days of my youth, back to the Technical Drawing Classes, you forgot the Log Tables going back a bit Jon.

These were true craftsmen and women back in those days. Who knows as MMC produced fine engineering during the WWII era maybe they made some bits.

I think mmc made landing gear. I remember tech drawing at Uni in the 70s, the. Cad in the 80s being such a great tool.

I did technical drawing at school in the '70s, I flipping loved it, I'd have been perfectly happy to go down the CAD/CAM engineering route if someone had pointed me in that direction, sadly my school was a traditional English grammar that looked down its nose at engineers. Twats.

rofl rofl rofl

I started out in the drawing office with a defense contractor in the 70’s. A huge office full of engineers and draughtsmen. Working on the drawing board was a delight but a completely different skill set compared today’s CAD. So much skill has been lost that will never be seen again. Gear chains were always fun. The amount of hand calcs and stress work that went along with any design was daunting but all done in an instance now on a computer without a second thought. When you got it wrong there was no delete or back button. You could only make so many changes to your layout before your rubber destroyed your 'work of art' that you might have been working on for weeks. The scary part was always waiting for that dreaded phone call from the workshop or assembly when the first proto was manufactured. “We have a little problem, could you pop down and take a look…..”

But there was at least one good thing about the move to CAD. At least I had a loft space boarded out with redundant A0 drawing boards grin2
