Hi all,

I'm still going through my (new to me) Plus 4...

In my car - the clutch pedal is flopped forward toward the driver quite a bit - still more forward than the brake pedal. It seems to me that they should both be in the same position looking at the parts diagram.

I was briefly down in the footwell to see if there is a set screw or some other retainer that is needed to secure the clutch pedal in some way - but I didn't find anything.

The clutch pedal functions fine otherwise - but I need to keep my foot on it to hold it in position so it's not flopped forward when driving.

Any idea from the group on a fix? I wonder if just lengthening the threaded clutch pivot/adjustment rod (part 11 in the diagram above) will bring the pedal back toward the firewall? Part 12 connects to the pedal. Will take a look and try that first.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Which year P4? There is on later cars a rod you can rotate in /out of the clevis joint after undoing the locking nut behind the pedal

Dear Crowbar, you are correct!

At least to the point of adjustment. The only thing that rotating item 11 does is control the relative position of the pedal. I found this out dealing with the same presentation of my clutch pedal. It is possible to do this on your back from under the car. It's a lot easier if can get it up in the air.

But I cannot remember if the link had to be lengthened or shortened? Equally, I know you'll find out as soon as you start to turn it. This is the only adjustment that exists in the clutch system.

Cheers, Colin

Thank you gents! My car is a 1965 Plus 4 - and I have a 4 post lift so up she goes tonight!

Now that I look at it - shortening, part 11 *should* pull part 12 (and the pedal) towards the firewall.

we'll see

check for wear in any of the parts the slightest wear will make all the difference. Be aware also that the the cylinder with the carbon thrust bearing should not 'ride' the clutch or it will wear prematurely. I have a 'stop' on my 1956 Plus 4.

So I shortened the rod a touch (at first too much and then couldn't engage the clutch!) and it helped a tad - but that really mainly moved the clutch release point further down during pedal push, though it moved the clutch pedal forward a little bit.

@BuyBritish is absolutely correct...the entire clutch linkage is very badly worn, with the holes the clevis pins go though quite out of round on the rod ends, so there's lots of slop in the system. Will probably have to replace the entire linkage to fix this eventually methinks...
